An 84 year oil man who ran SVO in his old VW Golf was fined by the Illinois Department of Revenue for not paying his taxes on his home brew fuel. So, watch out and file the paperwork :!:
But remember, SCREW the ROAD TAXES for OFF ROAD FUEL :!:

The chemicals used are Methanol (wood alcohol) and Sodium Hydroxide (LYE). If you want the true process make sure you stick with the one developed by George Washington Carver, it is the safest for our engines. There are other processes that are risky :!:
Follow all safety procedures :!:

If you live where the sun shines allot, look into solar heating of your process to the 140 f, electric heating will kill your savings. Water or a brine solution will hold enough heat to keep your process going, storage tanks can work.

Great info Steve.
I would also add that there are many excellent websites devoted to manufacturing your own biofuels including:
http://www.biodiesel.org/resources/fuelfactsheets/
http://www.utahbiodiesel.org/biodiesel_links.html#svo ..... and many others...

You gotta laugh when they go after the elderly  However, I have often wondered how in the world these people actually get caught. Unless you have a fairly large processing capability and are selling it, I don't know how anyone would actually know what you were burning.

One of the guys who got caught was in an old 300D in south? carolina, he had a "running on 100% biodiesel" sitcker on the back, he happened to get caught because the state was out checking RVs and such for running dyed diesel coming up to a large race(or something similar) meeting. He happened to get caught in the traffic, and got noticed for his sticker, and then got caught for running homemade biodiesel and not paying road tax.

BTW california makes everything so difficult that to actually pay road taxes on biodiesel becomes a painful process. Not to mention you first have to apply to get a card to even be able to purchase biodiesel.

Don't dump your glycerin down the drain, it is not a Toxic compound but sewer plant operators have night mares of the biodiesel home brewer dumping it down the drain. It does not kill off the bacteria (bugs), but like children given too much candy it will make them unruly and not do their job well. Anaerobic type bugs love glycerin, but like a good parent with a bag of candy, it needs to be rationed. If you have a waste water plant that has anaerobic digesters you may work out a deal with them where they can regulate the flow into their anaerobic digesters or blend it with septage from septic tank haulers.

If you plan to dump it into your own anaerobic septic tank (you are on your own if have an aerobic septic tank), you better take some lessons from a plant operator who can show you (under a microscope unless you work for Microsoft and can see them with out one :P ) what bugs are good guys and which are bad guys, plus how to be a good parent to the bugs you are feeding the glycerin to so you can regulate the amount you are feeding

If this all seams too complicated, one option is feeding it to mulch piles but check with your state and local people to see if there are any regulations you need to follow.

If you are only making it for your self your compost heap may be all you need to send the stuff back to nature, but check your state and local regulations first.

If your very industrious, you may find some one who wants the glycerin for making soap

Steve :)
