I said screw it and just used the red stuff.

j/k

But I did find diesel for $3.69 yesterday in Buda, TX. It was on my way home from Austin. The only good thing about this whole fuel price spike is my boss authorized me to work from home two days a week. That will save me about 320 miles a week of driving! :D

I'm with CRDBurnouts - I might have to consider the Kawasaki KLR650 for my commutes instead!!!

You're on to something.....where can you buy red diesel?

No one has ever pulled me over and checked the tank on my CRD. Heck, most don't even know it's a diesel.

I do agree with you. Since they primarily target farm vehicles and traditional diesel trucks, our little pack mules are stealthy in that respect. To answer your question, typically you can buy the dyed diesel out in the boondocks since that's where most of it is used. I live out in the sticks and I'm surrounded by ranches so it's all over.

Before we get flamed here, let me tell you that the dyed diesel is only about .40 less a gallon but the fine for using off-highway diesel for on-highway use is several thousand dollars. I do know that some states have been doing many more inspections since the fuel spike.

Take it for what it's worth.

.035c per mile cheaper to drive the diesel :P gotta love how diesel is .40c more then premium. If diesel wasen't so much more expensive the CRD would be a great deal. Below is my math, its all approximate and represents my local fuel prices. I average around 18mpg in town so my figures are actually worse :D

---------Gallons-----MPG-------Distance--------cost per gal---------cost for tank---------cost per mile
Gas------15-----------14-----------210--------------$3.25----------------$48.75--------------210/48.75=.23c
Diesel----19-----------20-----------380--------------$3.90----------------$74.1----------------380/74.1= .195c

Theft is theft. Yes I know I'll get flamed for being a moralist. But if your unwilling to help pay for the roads(which is what most of the fuel taxes are used for) then you have no business utilizing them.

Prices here seem to be hovering at $3.98/gallon, not fun, most expensive fill up ever for me yesterday.

Hopefully Diesel prices will soon drop relative to gas as we move out of the winter heating oil season and into the summer vacation season.

analysis and graphs: http://tonto.eia.doe.gov/oog/info/twip/twip.asp

the diesel graph top left is kinda depressing...

Cost per mile here.
Last 3 fill ups.
Gal- price-miles trav-gpm-total cost-cost/mile-date
15.958 3.359 381.7 23.9 53.60 .1404 2/12/08
14.864 3.599 360.1 24.2 53.50 .1485 2/23/08
15.807 3.739 368.6 23.3 59.10 .1603 3/07/08

Have it on excel but it didn't want to come here that way. Had to transpose it.
No matter how you look at it, diesel is much cheaper per mile, than the gasser's get.

Thanks for all the input from all the folks here.
Steve

Hmmm interesting chart. Well it is better than the baseline and the baseline is where it was design to run at. Also I have probable another 50k miles before I run out. I think I might have overbought a little. :D

Well with the rest of the world going with small diesel cars...the demand for diesel is climbing regardless of heating needs. We need to drive a bit slower, air up those tires and be more selective when we drive. Instaed of putting $2800.00 into the stock market, I purchased a scooter, helmet, scooter cover, insurance for a year and some decals (for asthetic reasons). Even if I made 20% profit in the stock market after fees, I still do better with the fuel savngs. $1560 (at least in savings) vs $560.00 in profit...and as prices continue to rise tha gap becomes larger. At less than .03/mile, I find reasons to take the scooter instead of the CRD at .18/mile. Evry 200 miles I save $30.00.

You can even get a scooter hitch to take it with you...for trips during the day that are not part of your commute.

Plug in hybrids are looking better and better.

Of course, living in Portland, so is this:

Really, 10 miles is just a warmup! In city that should be about 40 minutes +/- 5 X 2(trips). How long does your normal 10 mile commute take? Maybe try the ride on the weekend and see how it feels...if you just do it twice a week you will be saving $7.00 and getting healthy at the same time.

Are those still outrageously expensive? I know they made a few. I haven't seen one in person though.

Looks like someone else beat me to it..

The bike is the way to go for the lucky few that live in a bike friendly city. Last year I put 1700 miles on my fixed gear. hmmm lets see at 25 mpg thats 1700/25 = 68gal*2.75 = 187 bucks saved. This year assuming 1700 miles and 3.75, it'll be 255 bucks. I'm rolling in the money  . The best part is I found my road bike in the trash can. With 100 bucks for wheels and 30 for tires it's the best deal going. I'm just as fast or faster in some cases as cars during rush hour.

Yeah once those warmer days hit I'll be out on my bike. Well not a bicycle 40 miles one way may just be a little to far but I have a ZX6 that I buzz around on. Funny thing is since I don't have to pay for my fuel on the CRD the ZX6 and anything else will cost more.

I have been looking at a couple KLR650's up here and I will probably end up trading my willys for a bike.

The diesel version (military only) gets 140mpg @55mph!!!
