?. To make a long story short, what is the carmel colored gunk in the bottom of my barrel of biodiesel that I bought a 1 1/2 years ago? Pulled the pump out of the now empty drum and found that crud. Thanks.

It took a year and a half to empty the barrel? Most likely its glycerine that has dropped out of the bio-d. Does it look like syrup and have that consistency? Was it commercial bio-d or home brew?
It is a long time, even petroleum diesel must be stored carefully if it is to last that long. At any rate, I CERTAINLY hope it's not glycerine. The ASTM spec limit is 0.25% and that includes not just free glycerine, but unreacted vegetable oil and mono- and di-glycerides. If it was glycerine, that fuel was crap.

It is possible the fuel oxidized in that length of time.

Glycerin. After the initial transesterfication the BD will continue to drop that brown goop. This happens more when the transesterfication was not complete. I've found that when making a batch, you want enough lye to make that glycerin go solid after a couple days. But you need to get it out your processor tank within 6-8hours to prevent clogging.

I've heard of many bad batches of commercial BD. I've made a couple my self. I've found It's best to let your finished product sit for a week to see if anything else drops out before putting it in your tank.
