I ran a Fia grill cover this last winter and it helped some. The CRD pulls a lot of air from below the bumper though.

I just got back from an 800 mile trip from Vegas to So Cal and back. The best mileage I have managed in town (40% highway speeds/60% stop and go) is 23.6. This is with babying the pedal at every stop, staying at 60 mph on the freeway, coasting to stops, etc. etc. etc. I was expecting my highway mileage to be spectacular because I was consciously driving for improved mpg to whole trip. I was bucking a 30mph head wind most of the way down, but overall I only managed 27.8 mpg on the trip. I have managed over 30 once, but that was driving from Salt Lake City to Vegas, all highway, no traffic and a drop in elevation of 3000 feet. So all that being said, it sounds like 22 mpg is reasonable given your setup and driving conditions. JMHO.

And how many RPM's at 60mph? I don't see 5th gear and "peak efficiency" 1800ish RPMs until about 62-63

Good point. I accelerate to about 64 (until I get the shift into high gear) and then back down to around 60. I am turning about 1800 rpm under those conditions. The whole process gets scrapped on inclines of much degree or length. The Libby doesn't like hills at rpms lower than 2000 very much. If I am paying attention, I will disengage the cruise control until I am over the top or turn off O/D for a brief shot of speed (there goes the fuel savings :(). Weight and height definitely make a difference. I was "talking shop" with a guy in San Diego a few days ago that has a "city" CRD. Low profile tires, custom air dam and skirts, rear spoiler and some good engine mods (exhaust, air intake mod, chipped, etc). probably only added a couple hundred pounds from stock and he was averaging 24 city and 29 highway. It was a work in progress so it wasn't too pretty (needed paint more than anything and some of the glass work still needed smoothing better). Not a rig I would want to drive, but to each his own. I encouraged him to join the forum and post some pics. We'll see if he turns up.

1800 rpm here is at slightest above lockup, right around 63.
2000 rpm around 70 or so.
back her off around a construction zone or so, it will kick back
around 60 or so and than again 54 or so, sometimes that is notacible
much more than the other shifts.
Not that it matters but wan't to say so.

Do you have the defroster on?
If so your A/C is on and using power.
I notice when coasting downhill the engine temperature goes down. Efficiency must suffer with the cold.

I am now averaging a solid 26 + mpg every time I fill up.

I travel about 80% Highway and 20% city and usually travel at 70 mph on the HW.

My original average mileage was about 22 mpg last spring.

The things this I have done is:

1. Installed a Aero Turbine Muffler

2. ORM was the biggest MPG increase

3. Started using Optilube XPD. Have gotten a definite 1 to 2 mpg increase. Higher on the highway. Just bought a 5 gallons more.

4. Keep tires at 40 PSI

5. Amsoil Air Filter

Next winter I plan on getting a Fia Grill Blanket.

In May I going on a long trip and hope to average 30 mpg for the first time.

Its seems that every CRD is a little different, and the owner has to experiment to get the highest mileage.

On SGII, the water temp usually runs 166F on my CRD. That seems a bit low, wouldn't 180-190 F be more better?

I think Mr. Mopar has said that the low t'stat opening temp is to protect the aluminum cylinder head. Other than that, I think warmer would be better.

Themal dynamics are a huge factor in the diesel combustion process.

His engine is NOT even getting into the proper operating/efficient range. He needs to find out WHY ?

Diesel engines run cold by there very nature. There's several factors that cold be keeping his engine running cold to include injection pump and engine timing.

If a diesel engine is NOT getting up to normal operating temperatures, it will NOT run efficiently and WILL produce lower MPGs as a result.

Using radiator covers in cold climates always helps the engine reach nominal operating temperatures.

His engine is probably not getting up to temp because it isn't doing any work and is being overcooled under his driving conditions. Yes, efficiency will suffer a lot. A thermostat stuck open or a fan engaged when it shouldn't be are the only common malfunctions which would contribute to his temperature problem.

What's the relative wind when driving up the mountain? In some areas the wind comes down off the mountain almost every day. Are you driving up hill and into the wind? Wind tends to average out on the flat, but a tail wind down a mountain does nothing for you.

There is definetly a tendency for the wind to go down the mountain, I just need to move and/or buy a new KLR650 and it wont be an issue but I do notice my fuel guage dipping down as I drive up the mountain. I'm just over 150 on this tank and my fuel gauge is reading 5/8's, probably averaging 19-20.

I live in the most expensive darn place besides NY and LA, a two bed, 1.5 bath in Edwards, CO rents for $1600-$1900 and is worth around $450K, Diesel fuel at the cheapest has reached $4.199/gal. I hate all the yuppie a-holes up here who come 2 weeks out of the year to there million dollar homes to ski and piss me off and think they own the whole Vail valley. I am one of the only people up here who doesn't care about skiing or snowboarding and I can't afford to live in the area because of Nazi market rates and greedy, money grubbing Richard holes who have made it OK to gouge people who just want to make an honest living. Maybe I'll follow suit and stop paying attention while I'm backing out of my parking spot or figure out a way to make bank off all the rich pricks who visit Vail for their skiing and golf. Sorry for the strong words, I just had to vent, rant over...

I hear ya buddy. I agree, the cost of living is way too high. Maybe you should move........................it might make you feel better. Why the Denver area?

I guess I should change that on my profile. I moved up to Wolcott, CO which is 20 something miles west of Vail and I work in Edwards, 11 miles from where I live. This area is just ridiculous for housing, luckily now is the time for me to find a better place to live.
