I have been trying a version of that & the darn spring is so sprung I've bloodied my knuckles on the fan blade trying to move it. Now there is blood and grease on my keyboard. :shock:

Finished! With thanks to you guys.
Now, I just need to tape up my arms which appear to be missing the top layer of skin.

I ended up using a 2 ft long pipe slipped over the end of my ratchet wrench to release the tension. Once that was accomplished the most time consuming part of the operation was attempting to properly position the new belt. Just as one section was threaded properly the other would fall off.

The new belt is significantly more flexible than the old one. It is partly due to the fact that it is new but it also has nifty cross cuts that allow it to bend easier. It is supposed to be a decent belt and will be interesting to see how it performs over the long run. But at $35 I can buy a new one every year and still come out ahead of the Mopar. Over a hundred bucks for a friggin' Mopar fan belt is is completely out of line. Belts just aren't that expensive to build and any material cost differences would be negligible. Perhaps they are trying to recover some of the money they wasted replacing my plastic torque converter?

Still, there is something that is cycling on and off quite frequently at idle. It may be the AC but I turned the knob to the blow-on-my-face setting (as apposed to the defrost which runs the AC) Also, it has a more hollow sound to it than just they typical AC whir - more like a valve opening that goes baaaaaahh mmmmmm baaaaahhh mmmmm etc. each for about 5 seconds. (Yes, I looked for sheep but found none. They are all still in the back seat where I left them)
I think I remember reading someone on the forum describe hacking into the AC controls in order to give the option turn it off completely. Is the AC supposed to cycle even when not needed? I do notice the my wife's 06 does not have such a noticeable cycling of whatever this noise is...hmmm.

Mine does that too (2005), I've just assumed it was the typical cycling of the compressor to use it as a means to dehumidify the air and prevent window fogging.

Also the bearing in the clutch pulley on the alternator can make a rattle/squeeky noise had to change mine a few weeks ago. Took belt off and span the pulley by hand it sounded and felt rough.

I spun it when I had the belt off & it spun freely with no rough feeling at all. What I am hearing is a cycling of something on and off as well as a fairly consistent baaaaahhh sound that is coming from the front of the engine. My wife's 06 doesn't do it in fact overall her car has always been quieter than mine.
I just changed the oil this evening and took off the skid plate which revealed various rocks rolling around as well as a couple of loose mounting bolts. I cleaned it up, put caulking on some of the plastic shields and other loose parts underneath and am waiting for it to dry overnight to see if that might quiet it down a bit.
Note: I went with the Shell Rotella 5-40w synthetic and the NAPA 5115, 1551 (?) which some people seem to have luck with. It is a much larger filter than the official recommended version and fits fine. The Rotella was significantly less than the Mobile 1 that is recommended in the manual - about 1/2 the price at the local parts store - and meets all standards.

Chris,
Have you looked at the part on the passenger side of the jeep that has a pulley and clutch like your AC compressor? It's a It's a engine heater and may be what your hearing. Also when the heater control is set to just the vent position the AC compressor does not come on.

Just a guess.

Thanks Joe,
Is this the viscous heater I have been hearing about? If so, then no, I don't see it clutching in and out when the car is up to temp and idling. It actually sound more like a muffled air compressor of some kind. Weird sound. I would not be worried if I just knew what it was or if my wife's 06 made the same exact sound.
