The parking brake on all automobiles is linked to the rear brakes only.
Not all vehicles.

LOL, I suppose it would if you're autocrossing the KJ and racing it on the Nürburgring. BTW, what was it like taking a CRD KJ on the Nürburgring? You do have the manual transmission, correct? I couldn't imagine taking my automatic CRD on any race circuit...not enough control.

Only comes in an automatic, 6 speed was not avalible on the US models.

I am trying to think of an automobile that has a driveshaft or front parking brakes. I can't. I know lots of trucks that fall into this catagory. 1/4 ton Jeep maybe?

Yup, my left rear stuck last winter and the dealer replaced both rear calipers, rotors and pads under warranty at about 32K. The still stick sometimes on the new ones.

What "automobile" can you think of that utilizes the parking brake on the front wheels?

Doesn't have to be the front brakes either, there are other ways of mounting a parking brake.

Yes, technically, you can mount a parking brake anywhere you would like (ie. driveshaft, etc) but traditionally it is mounted on the rear brakes. I have yet to see a car/SUV/Truck with a parking brake not integrated into the rear brakes.

So yes, I understand the feasibility of an alternative mounting, but have yet to see an application. If anybody has seen one, I would be interested to learn about it, so please let me know.

I had a mid-80's subaru with front mount E-brake, good thing too because the back brakes were disconnected/removed. pretty scary on snowy roads.

can the rear rotors be machined or does everyone just put on new rear rotors with a brake service? i'm about due to replace the rear pads at 63K and the discs are grooved up decently.

also is there a method to lube the sliders or something to prevent freezing?

I alwasy replace everything when I ma in there. I disassyble everything and clean an relube everything. That is why when I go to the US I spend a ton of money in the autoparts store, stocking up.

Looks like I am going wiht the ATE rotors and Ferodo pads froma local autoparts store for about $210.

Not very many,I was referring to the fact that not every vehicle does not have the parking brake attached to the rear brakes.

The first 2-4 years of civialin offered Hummer H1's,used a parking brake that was mounted on the pinion yoke of the rear diff and being a full time 4wd vehicle it's a "4 wheel" parking brake setup. There are many more vehicles that had the parking brake offered on the rear output of the t-case,a very popular mod for the rock crawling crowd, mostly Toyota's and Samurai's.

Really, what models and year subarus have the parking brakes mounted on the front? I'll have to check them out. I wonder what the reasoning behind going against convention was.

1) Front brakes are larger and less apt to let the car roll down hill.
2) The front of a Subaru is much heavier and less apt to slide down the hill with the brake on.
3) Their bean counters though shorter cables would save them money.

P.S. Many older and antique trucks have the parking brake on the out put shaft of the transmission, the mechanics are more simple and being closer to the cab, the driver would smell the burned brake lining sooner if it were left on!

lol, quicker to smell a problem...I like it!

I definitely recognize certain advantages of having the parking brakes on the front. It just seems like it would be difficult to route and mount cables to the front calipers, with the front wheels turning and all. How does Subaru deal with this? Is it a hydraulic parking brake?

Probably would have been easier for Subaru to utilize a driveshaft, or other drivetrain parking brake.

Well I got the Ferodo pads today. The other autoparts place did not order what I asked for so I dropped the order. I went to another place and they had the pads in stock but not the ATE rotors. They should be in mid-week., they even take the tax paperwork.

Reading through three pages I find 2 things missing

First. Our rear EMERGENCY brakes are DRUM and the "service" brakes are disk

Second with as many TDI owners we have here, I'm supprised nobody mentioned that on the A4 series jetta VW used soft pads on the rear to avoid squeeling  I replaced the origial rear pads on my jetta with harder ones and then got the high pitched squeel

Also Chrysler cars from as late as the early fifties had the parking brake mounted at the rear of the transmissions :?

GRRRRRR I hate doing things twice. The parts are not correct and noting is open till MONDAY! The rear disc is the right size but the iinner park brake is too small of a diameter. The brake pads are the right shape but the spring does not allow for the pad to sit properly in te caliper, GGGRRRRRRR.
