My engine idles at 750 rpm very smoothly the alternator feels nothing from the internal combustion that is taking place inside the block of our diesel engine. My engine shakes no more than the six cylinder does. I will let you know if any problems develop in the future but my thought is they will not, since I have eliminated two potential problems with the pulley. It should keep turning for a long time without any noise or problem. It will just keep on charging like it is supposed to do.

You don't feel the forces because of the twin balance shafts designed to dampen them in the block, and the lquid-filled motor supports - but the forces are still in the crankshaft dynamic, as that's where they develop during the pressure thrust from each combustion event, and anything connected to the crankshaft is affected by them, whether by gear or serpentine belt - as mentioned , this is the only engine in DCJ's entire lineup that gets this specially-designed pulley, and the reasoning is sound - not even the big Cummins 6cyl gets similar pulley - and notice the oem serp belt, how soft and compliant it is compared to standard serp belts - not used anywhere but on this engine - but, anyway, the deed is done - I guess just keep us informed of the chronological progress

The service manual says pretty much what GMCTD is saying about the pulley. It was done for the reasons he mentioned above. This is not the first I've heard of problems with the pulley though. It could be that the cure is worse than the disease. Time will tell. I too look forward to updates.

You also have to remember that they (DC) wouldn't have put that type of a pully on the CRD if they didn't have to! Maybe cut a few corners here and there, (like no pump in the tank), but that type of pully must be pretty important.

Torque-absorbing pulley and compliant belt prevent repeated serp belt breakage and tensioner mechanism destruction

Agreed. Is the alternator the only place they used that type of pulley? I think it is, and that makes me subscribe to the theory that it has as much to do with protecting the alternator as anything.
