An exhaust brake is only an exhaust brake when it's blocking off the exhaust - block off the intake and the engine compresses little air, so no resistance - that's why it shuts down smoothly like a gasser (patooie!) when the valve closes -

From my understanding, if you don't pull the butterfly, the computer will sense that there is less gas (air and exhaust) dumped into the engine if the EGR is blocked. The butterfly will control fresh air coming into the engine by closing partially to reduce the volume of air when the EGR opens, hence it sees no deviation in "airflow." If you block the EGR and then pull the butterfly, the engine still gets what it is supposed to get but doesn't see any deviation so no CEL. Others may correct me if I am wrong. I may not be 100% clear either.

That is not what I saw on my CRD EGR setup. When I was "Looking" at all the different functions at the same time, I saw that when the EGR was told to open, the MAF reported LESS air going through it immediately. This is because exhaust was now coming in and forcing less air to come in through the turbo. The computer expects to see a reduction in MAF when the EGR is fired off. No reduction = failure = CEL. Also during certain throttle settings, the FCV was also commanded to fire off in conjunction with the EGR forcing even more of a reduction of MAF. Again the computer expects to see this reduction or = failure = CEL.

This is what the SEGR is built around.

Mine doesn't shut down like a gasser (patooie!) anymore :D ! No CEL and no EGR in my intake! I love it! It make me smile everytime I start it up and look down at my gauges and not see a CEL!

This can't happen to a common rail with piezo injectors unless, of course the ECU fails and continues to fire them.

I was reading thru the thread and since im a total retard i have a few questions....

This would have the same effect as the SEGR, but will only problem is a shutdown rougher ?
works for US models too ?
Do you Plug in the MAF back ? (aka no orm)
does the ruff shutdown affects in any negative way the engine ?

was this fcv, egr a chrisler retardation or came from VM motori?

This was the thread I could find - I'm pretty sure there was another one
http://www.lostjeeps.com/forum/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?p=206368#206368
but basically something breaks and you're burning engine oil instead of diesel - keeps going until you run out of oil.
The FCV would stop that because it stops the air.

I am not sure how the SEGR changes things, but this will not allow any EGR into the intake like the SEGR. The SEGR will allow the FCV to shut and make a softer shutdown.

This does work on US models.
I did plug the MAF back in, hence no CEL.
And, I do not believe the harder shut down will affect anything. It is only slightly noticable. It shuts down like the older Dodge trucks withe the Cummings.

I had it happen to a jetta from crank case oil in the air filter. At over 250k miles it had a lot of blow by from worn rings  05 and 06 kj's have the R428 engine that does not have the piezo injectors. They are on the newer RA428 panther engine. Ours are solenoid operated.

No CEL yet!! Go ahead and do it. You can always undo it if you don't like it. I'll bet you you won't put the FCV butterfly back in.

Parking over a gas spill, or a oil leak into the intake can also cause a diesel to run away, but that is still not common enough to need a FCV for runaway. Mr. Mopar has indicated that it was never intended for that purpose. Speculation on my part, but it may not even close the intake tight enough to shut down a runaway. Who wants to test it?

Just rolled over 200,000 on my 99 Cummins and it's never ran away. Come to think of it, my friend has a diesel business and we talked about diesels "Running Away" and he has never heard of one doing it either.
So I have to ask, Has anyone ever had one, know of someone, read about one running away?

I've never looked in the later manuals, but I know the 90 model Dodge owner's manual told you exactly where to direct a fire extinguisher to smother a runaway. I don't think it is at all common though.

I have had a couple tired VW Diesels with badly worn piston rings start to run away. If it happened when the hood was open, I clogged the air intake. If it did it driving, the brakes were the only option. Run away was caused on the old VW by sucking the oil vapor into the intake and replacing the fuel with crankcase oil. VW had a recall to fix this on the early 1.5L diesels by adding a hose that went down to the front of the engine.

Provert or home made equivalent will prevent this along with other problems like goo in the intake.

I was told to block off the at the air intake in the event of a runaway, can't imagine blocking off the airbox all that easily with the
airscoop stuck away where it is :)
