Okay, I read this thread and I’m still a little confused. I’m about to order the factory wiring harness for my Gasser KJ so I can tow my camper. So what’s the problem with the factory writing harness? Maybe the fact that the harness doesn't work with the trailer brakes? The mopar harness (RV 7-way connector) should be designed to plug into the factory wiring (through the taillights), so I’m not sure why you guys are talking about extra wires, etc.

The "factory trailer wiring harness" your about to order is not the same as a "factory installed harness" :? The harness connects in the rear right quarter panel and unless you have the EVIC all signals and wiring are NOT present in the rear quarter panel to operate the included relays. :? It is not complete

This requires a "supplemental" harness that's a rather half a** arangment. It does not disconnect the trailer battery when the ignition is off for one thing. This will allow any load from the trailer to run down the starting battery in the jeep. Additionally KJ's, at leat my 06 crd, are already partially set up for towing even if you do need the supplemental harness and the supplemental harness does not use what's already there. I think what your reading here is people using the supplemental harness but incorporating what's already in dash area of the KJ, that's what I did. Trailer tail lights do not run directly off the onboard lighting system. They are operated by relays and those relays need a power lead that's not there. If you try to install using the wiring diagrams in the FSM you will be driven to drink or go insane

I hope this clears it up for you but know first hand it can confuse you more

Thank you, your description does “help” clarify what I’m about to get myself into. Thankfully, I already have the EVIC, so maybe this process will be a littler easier. Let me ask you this: My RV dealer said they would install everything for “FREE”. I explained to them that I do not have the factory tow package nor the wiring harness. What doesn’t make sense is that they said I didn’t need the factory tow harness, and that they would run all the wiring needed when they put in the electric brake controller. So, either they know a whole lot more about this than I do, or they are going to be in for a surprise. Any thoughts?

Somebody correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't the Liberty set up like a European, or Japanese vehicle with the brake light separate from the turn signal? Trailers, at least in the US, have a combined brake light and turn signal. The relays are needed to convert the tow vehicle's setup to be compatible with the trailer. Anyone offering their services should know this. There are 3rd party devices for the Euro/Jap vehicles that will handle the conversion.

Right and also the relays are used to isolate the trailer lights from the KJ's lighting circuits.

dieselenthusias. There's more then one way to install trailer lights on vehicles. In my opinion the factory towing harness is the "ideal" way to go. It makes a "cleaner" job. Since you have the a EVIC it should be a very simple install for them. All that again should be needed is to plug the harness into the plugs behind the plastic cover in right rear then find the blue wire for the brake controler under the dash. They will also need plus and minus 12 volts for the brake controler. If I were you I would get the towing harness and put it in myself. The plastic cover in the right rear comes off pretty easily. Next you remove a large round plastic plug in the floor the harness goes through. The harness has a rubber boot that properly fills the hole. Put the harness in then you seperate a male a female plug behind the right rear plastic cover and plug the harness into those two plugs and you should (that word again) be good to go. They should (?) have a test plug they can plug in and check for proper operation. Or depending on your abilities get the harness and take it to them. Doing it without the factory harness could be using insulating piercing clips over your jeeps wiring. (down and dirty) Or a aftermarket "T" adapter that plugs into the jeep somewhere. (better)

Yes it is setup like in the Libby. The trailers there use amber turn signal on trailers. The e-spec harnes plugged right in to my Libby and worked great. No modifications.
