It's more common for me to have someone approach me at the diesel pump than not. Sometimes it's the attendant coming over to tell me it's a diesel pump, other times it's a commercial truck or diesel pickup owner looking around the pump with a weird look on his face.

"That's a diesel?"

And sometimes I get questioned when I start it up in a parking lot. If someone is walking by, they invariably stop upon hearing the startup. Probably about 33% of the time they come over and say something to me.

Never had the attendant shut the fuel off though.

I'll mention that the TDI forum has a thread on funny stories at the gas pump that now runs something like 275 pages or so.

I've had several comments at the pump when filling my CRD. Most recent one was when I pulled in next to a guy already filling a duramax. When I pulled the pump handle off the pump, he said, hey, that's diesel. I said yup, it's a diesel jeep. He said, didn't sound like it when you pulled in, what kinda mileage you get. We had a nice conversation, and of course, I was done before he was, so when I fired it up to leave, he said, hey, that's the quietest diesel I've ever heard!

Next to last one, however, was a bit of a bummer. Pulled in next to the diesel pump (only one, in the middle of the island between gas pumps) at a station that only offered full service. The gas jock was right there, and demanded I pull up to the gas pump, as there was a guy in a gas pickup behind me. I looked back, said he doesn't need the diesel pump, but I do. Jock said You don't either now pull up, you'r blocking him! (Other side was empty, btw.) He was absolutely not gonna give ground that I didn't need to be blocking the middle of the island, and I wasn't gonna fight with him, so I climbed in, fired it up and calmly drove across the street to buy my diesel fuel.

Someone here posted a funny reply once. When told they were at the diesel pump, they replied " I heard diesel gives you better mileage, so i'm going to try it." That was the best reply I have heard.

Oh, I forgot my favorite story! Right after I had first got my tractor, I took her from VA Beach up to Narragansett, RI. On my way through the north east, I stopped at a fuel station in one of those states that doesn't allow you to pump your own fuel. I think it was NJ...can't remember, been trying to forget for a while. Anyway, I pull up and the guy comes over as I'm getting out of the truck. He grabs the gas handle and I say, "I need diesel." He stops, looks at me with the gas handle still in his hand, and says "Dat's a deesul?" (he was Jamaican). I told him it was, indeed, a diesel. He flashes this HUGE smile, puts away the gas pump, yanks out the diesel handle and starts filling me up. While it's filling up and I'm washing the windshield, he comes up and asks me all about it. During my conversation, he keeps calling over the other fuel-pumpers as they happen by the area. By the time we were done fueling, we had 5 fuel-station employees staring at the motor. They all stood there as I started it up and they all smiled and gave me thumbs-up. It was simply amazing how excited they were to see that truck.
