Isn't molybdenum the stuff that is used in break-in oils? I've heard of it before, what exactly does it do?

If "increasing the engine's durability and lifespan" is one of the answers... Hell yes I would want that. I think we are all trying to find the right oil to do that.

Here is a review of Moly basics... http://www.bobistheoilguy.com/index.php ... &Itemid=62
The problem with Moly is the same as with Zink and other metals used for lubrication. They all cause damage to catalytic converters. Not a problem for us, but the EPA does not like what it can possibly do to the millions of cats on the road.

Ooh, me likey. Ok, so since I'm already a big fan of Mobil 1 Delvac synth (which that chart shows has a fair amount of ZDDP etc, b/c it is also sold as M1 Truck & SUV) can we get the moly as an additive that will stay in suspension that we can add to our favorite oils ourselves?

I'll have to check the next time I am through a Flying J, but I thought they sold the Schaffer's oil. There is a Pilot truck stop a lot closer to me, I'll check there too for it. I'd say Moly > Zddp / Zinc, is that a fair assessment?

My undergraduate degree is in metallurgy. Molybdenum is also used in an alloying element to increase the heat treat depth of hardened tool steels. Or in other words, "Moly makes your tool hard."

Zddp can be found at napa. Lucas has a product called TB zinc plus, which is recommended for racing applications or vehicles without Cats. 1 oz. added per quart comes out to 1187.5PPM additional zinc/quart.
Here is a cool paper which I haven't finished reading yet but is very interesting. http://www.apmaths.uwo.ca/~mmuser/Papers/TL05.pdf
