OK you didn't say anything about touching the accelerator

What you discribe sounds very much like the slip joint binding where the front of the driveshaft rides on the transmission tail shaft

Drop the driveshaft and put some grease on the spline

I have been away from this list for a while and just now saw your suggestion. I will pull the shaft and check out the spline but as the transfer case is full of fluid and the spline is open to this lube, I have my doubts. Will reply here.
Thanks.
P.S. Slow engagement is still a problem and getting worse. Cold start and warm start often exhibits blue smoke from my lips.

Hi Joe,

I pulled my drive shaft yesterday to check out your theory of a binding or sticking slip spline on the rear drive shaft. I was wrong in stating that the spline was open to transfer case lubricant and should not be the problem. As you likely know, the output shaft of the transfer case on this vehicle is not like most other vehicles in that it is isolated from the transfer case lube. This spline must be periodically inspected, cleaned and re lubricated. I preformed this work yesterday and will report on any change but on a 10km drive after the work, I could not get the clunk at brake release to show!
Thank you very much for the advise!

John

Then maybe your front pump has an air leak allowing fluid to drain out when sitting overnight. There's a new and improved pump with a different cover
Somewhere here there's pictures of both the old and new pumps. Do a search. :jester:

Thanks for the heads up on the revised pump.

I found the pictures and discussion. I also looked around on the web for this mod and could not find anyone stating that this was a real cure for the slow prime problems. There are so many problems with this transmission I really don't want to throw money at it unless I am sure I can correct all the problems. Not to mention all the hours I will spend to do the work.
I have and can continue to live with the slow engagement problem until the thing finally fails or somebody comes out with a rebuild kit fixing all the problems.

I may see if I can find one of these transmissions that have been scrapped in a wrecking yard and have a go at an sorting out this prime problem myself.

I do have one thought and that is that the pan filter (suction) seal on the pickup tube might be the problem. It occurs to me that this seal is installed backward to what it should be. The lip of this seal is installed up and this is in my opinion backward to what it should be. When the fluid is cold suction might be great enough to cause the lip to lift from the surface of the tube. If the seal was installed with the lip down, suction would increase the seal pressure and not reduce it.

It has nothing to do with the torque converter failing. It is caused by TF draining back into the pan through the cooler return filter. http://www.wjjeeps.com/tsb/tsb_wj_2101505.pdf

I've been living with this condition for nearly 2 years. It all started when I changed my tranny filters and fluid. I read the same thing about defective anti drainback valve in one of the filters. I probably got a bad on. Not so much of an issue in colder weather, morso in warmer weather after sitting for 8 hours or more.

My ever present, slow to engage problem, for some unknown reason, has vanished! I have changed nothing and have not experienced the problem for about a month now. I have no explaination.

More: Clunk at brake release after stop.

Just to follow up with this issue from a few months ago. Joe, you were right on the money. I have not seen the problem since servicing the spline.

Thanks again!

John
