I was piddling with the Jeep yesterday afternoon and decided to remove the Magnaflow muffler and try it mufflerless. It's a little louder but still not very noticeable. I think this will be the way I keep it, including the side exit exhaust.

Any ideas??? Go with a glasspack, or a straight turbo back exhaust? Duel or single? I was hoping to get some ideas from you all here. I don't want a loud drone, just better fuel economy and be able to breath better.
The only thing that might give a drone is straight pipe, and thhat would be at some highway speed like maybe 65 to 70 mph. A glass pack or low restriction mufflers will sound almost stock. So far it seems the best is the cheapest muffler, aka straight through glass pack muffler. I put a flowmaster 40 on the wife's CRD and could not tell the deffirence in sound. Turbo does spool up quicker though, how much is debatable. I would think it has reduced EGT', but not as well as glass pack muffler.

PS: No muffler is auto fail for vehicle inspections in all 50 states.

Are these types of power and efficiency benefits available on any vehicle that swaps out the muffler or is this a CRD thing?

It's a TURBO thing and much more a diesel thing then gasser thing.

OldNavy,

FYI: both the catalytic converter and the turbocharger meet the legal definition of muffler in most, if not all, states.

Also, many states don't have inspections!

Only on large diesel OTR rigs and even most states now have changed that law. In MO you will not pass inspection without a muffler even on a OTR rig. I do remember the days when all turbos had the muffler certification stamp, they don't any longer. Also cat's were never qulified for a muffler in any state. Most states have on line inspection rules and if need be go check you state, I just looked this up for MO back about the time I switched out the wife's muffler.

"It's a TURBO thing...."

Is this to say that for us "gassers" the only benefit of swapping mufflers is the sound?

The difference for a NA gasser is far less dramatic, a muffler swap on a non turbo gasser may only give a couple of tents of a hp on a dino and not help a with engine spool up at all. On a turbo gasser it can make lot more difference like on diesel, but EGT's are different for turbo gas & turbo diesel.

You are correct though a nice sounding muffler is just that, and generally not enough of power increace in NA gasser to make a enough difference in a drag strip run to be worth the money spent as general rule unless you have done some other real mod's. The worst bang for the buck in a gasser is a chip followed by intake mod, check real dyno runs for that not what some company advertizes. Headers and a inexpensive mandral bend dual exhaust system on a V6 or V8 is about the best bang. On a Mustang GT V8 a chip, CALI and mufflers (it comes stock with headers) will get you 50 hp where a NOS for about a third of the price will get you twice that HP and without pushing the engine to far either.

The Dodge Neon SRT4, a turbo gas 4cyl, comes with no muffler from the factory. Cat and turbo is enough for that engine for any state that has inspections/dB requirements.

That's strange, my buddy's SRT4 has a cat & muffler. Man that thing is a rocket, he's darn near give me 3 heart attacks with the darn thing. He is always calling my Magnum a 2 ton slug, I would love to try out an SRT8 Magnum some weekend and blow his doors off.

I bought a 2.5" magnaflow from SCHUCKS and really like it. $59.00 The stock tailpipe is fine, you will need a bit of 2.5 inch pipe to go with it, or just take it to a shop.

# inch or larger would help, but unless you are going to really up the power and start racing it's not needed.

I installed Magnaflow # 12226 this weekend and a Predator module. First the muffler- install was easy with a welder and a torch.Get about 3 feet of stainless 2.5 pipe though. Sound diffference is very noticable I think. Especially at low rpm's. I won't say it is loud, but it is louder than a stocker. The sound is very low, almost like a growl. At high rpm's it is also louder than stock but you have to listen for it. I don't care for it but it's welded on now and not coming back off. My wife didn't say anything about it but then she wouldn't unless something was dragging and then only after a week of it! The Predator- I was uncomfortable putting this on with all the wild rumors circulating around. I called Dr. Performance and spoke with them(nice people) and bought one. Install was 30 seconds tops. I couldn't believe the difference!! If you just putt around you won't notice it(the majority of my driving). The first time I hit the acc. pedal hard the tires instantly broke loose and I had to let off. Anything more than half throttle at a dead stop will break the tires loose. It's actually kind of annoying, I will have to learn to drive it again. It also decreases the turbo-lag by half in my opinion. Where it really shines is the 35-60 mph zone. You hit it and it really winds up fast.Feels like double the power-no joke! Did the Liberty need the extra power? I don't think so, I didn't buy it for blazing acceleration. Dr. Performance said a 10% increase in mileage. That is why I bought it and if it decreases my mileage I will sell it. Another observation- It has been raining for two days and these tires(wrangler st) are so slippery in the rain with this module. I haven't tried, but I bet I could break them loose at 50 mph!

Nothing is more quiet than stock but also remember that anything other than stock will flow better, give you more power and keep your EGT's a bit lower. I have not really noticed a mileage improvement and that was my main reason for the mod but I also drive below 65MPH almost always so the gains in mileage may be better at faster speeds.
