Sombody was able to get it here somehow

EBAY listing stated that it was imported from Denmark.

There was a link on the e-bay listing to a carfax report that gave the above information. The export to Germany also had the departation port that I left off
The e-bay listing also had a "listed locally and may be withdrawn" statement

If you come across a left hand drive version of a CRD Wrangler while in Europe, you pull the engine/tranny/ and transfer case out, ship them separate from the body, then re-title it here as an assembled vehicle. People have been doing this with diesel Smart cars for awhile now.

How? What is the rule from EPA to get around this? I would do this on a KK if I go back to Germany.

I don't have the laws in front of me. My neighbor bought a smart car like this, and I've seen them on ebay several times. My assembled sand rail is street legal and needs no crash test results or smog testing. JM2C.

Yup, looked at that before.

Basically when you seperate the drivetrain(read axles, engine, everything) its just a body, just a big car part.

Same thing with the drivetrain.

This makes getting it past customs the easy part, no Bond, no troubles, etc.

Then, in your local area you need to figure out what it takes to get it to count as a built kit car.

That's a good clarification - the smart car is rear engine - so pulling the engine cradle takes out the entire drivetrain.

Now if a Escort Cosworth was just as simple.

Need to pull the front axle/suspension too. No running gear at all.

So...I guess you need a really big box to put the body in.... :?

What I really mean: how do you get that into a sea container without damage?

And again, if anyone really really wants a 2.8crd JK I can help out.

But...prices start at around $35.000...for used, $44.000 for a new one...

Maybe it be better to just get an engine? Would be much cheaper.

Hold that thought...so if I get this right you can have a CRD in the US as long as you put it together yourself? (like Sam is doing to his MJ)

So why has no one informed if VM has a sales point in the US? All they do is sell engines. They don't care if it is for a generator or a boat...or a car.

What if I send out an engine to the US..saying it's for a generator or whatever. Is it then still not allowed because of your emission laws?

If not...who wants one? I could probably also get the ECU for the piezo injection through my contacts with BOSCH.

:D
