Lancer: what you describe does not really sound like "typical" TC shudder. I have never been able to get mine to do it for more than a few seconds, and then only on a pretty steep climb. I think that you have a different problem altogether, because if heat was being generated by the transmission, it would not really have a way to heat the engine coolant up like that. Also, if the tranny had indeed somehow gotten that hot, it would have tripped the transmission overheat light, and not the engine temp gauge.

I would look at an EGR valve stuck in the open position, which can also cause a misfire condition and heat the coolant up due to the high flow of very hot exhaust gasses overloading the EGR cooler.

If I can duplicate it on Saturday - I'll ask for the tc to be replaced at the next service. I'll let you know how I get on.

Thanks again for all the help from everyone who has replied - especially you Doc.

I absolutely experience shudder in my crd, and have been doing so for a year or so. If it causes damage, mine would be broken. The shudder is how i know i need to change my air filter. If it does not shudder, my filter is plugged @>22 psi

Thanks Nursecosmo. As I said, I'll see if I can duplicate the shudder on Saturday. If I can, and if Doc's suggestion re the od works, then I'll ask the dealer to look at the tc at the next service (due in about a month).

I'll also ask them to look at the EGR valve, although I'd be surprised if it was that gunked up!

Thanks again to everyone :)

As Arnold Schwarzenegger's robot head said in Total Recall: Get ready for a surprise!

One of the benefits of the Suncoast converter was the lower stall. From what I understood, the "Euro" factory TC has the same stall as the state-side TC. Is the Euro TC going to provide more durability, but without the driveability improvement of the lower stall rate? I remember this coming up in another thread but I never saw an answer.

Anybody know the answer to this? Replacing a high-stall turd with a more durable high-stall turd doesn't make alot of sense.
