Yeah its like linewrbl said get the one with the lowest miles and best service history.

I drove 3 of them. one 2005 limited, one 06 sport and the first one i drove is the one I bought an 06 very loaded limited. It wasn't the lowest miles but only a few thousand more than the lowest had the best known service history and all the features I wanted plus some more. Oh and I liked the color best so I lucked out.

I would though like to find a copy of that service manual for myself and to share with a mechanic who may do work for me. I have looked for it and only came up with dead links. If any one can help out I would be very thankful.

Thanks I think that's where I found it before but I can't down load as a free user. they want me to pay €6.99 for 30 days.

edit: I got. :D you just have to keep trying and it keeps taking you around in a loop untill the web site decides it's your turn.

Wow great response so far !. My off roading involves, putting my boat in the lake and driving over concrete medians and curbs (which amounts to NO off roading) but still requires a truck with 4wd.

Looks like the 2006 has more features which will be of value to me since I spend lots of time on the highway and tend to end up driving in every bad snow storm we get :(

I already have the service manual - did you know the odometer can't be flipped to read in KM's , I was thinking of importing from the US, but I don't want the hassle of a cluster conversion (I'm too anal..) So I'll stick with Canadian units.

I'll definitely be putting a budget lift on it (help keep more of the truck out of the water when boat launching) probably the GDE tune and since I won't need to build a SEGR then it will offset some of the GDE cost. Some airlift bags, upgraded sound system, navigation and HID lighting.

Dumb question, (for Canadians) do we need to run the CRD's through the Ontario Drive Clean ? If we do I wonder if it will pass with the GDE on it

I'm glad you weren't dissuaded from the Jeeps, I was having a grumpy day with mine that affected my response to you. I'm one of the two that has lost an engine, and while I still have no solid answer as to why, I don't blame the truck, I blame MOPAR for cutting me off from the support that I desperately needed, with no reason or recourse. If this was a defect, it should have been covered. If you can get one that is in decent shape and keep it away from the dealer, the help here WILL make it as reliable as any vehicle can be.

With your emissions question, the GDE tune will pass any test that the normal ECU would pass. Normal tests don't look for the actual EGR operation, b/c there isn't any non-invasive way to discover the EGR's activity just by sniffing the exhaust. So it will depend on the rest of the truck's performance, not on the tune alone.

That said, if you know when it will be getting tested, put a high percentage of biodiesel into the tank before you go, and the numbers will be MUCH better from regular diesel simply b/c bio is a better and cleaner fuel.

If that's what your are using it for I would say try and get a Limited with leather seats and seat heaters. Supposedly the cloth seats stain with water.

I am not 100% sure, but I think the 2006's are more prevalent in Canada than the 05's as far as the Canadian version. I have seen a few 05's for sale but they are usually US imports.

You should definitely lean towards an 06. You will LOVE the ESP in the kind of driving you're doing. Good luck on your search!

Not supposedly. The cloth seats DO "stain" with water, it isn't a stain so much as a weird discoloration. The easiest fix is to mist the entire seat with plain water so that it all looks even. When it dries, it will be back to normal again. I don't know what these seats are made from, this is the weirdest thing I've ever seen.

I like my leather seats too. This is my second car with them. Leather was not something I had to have but I sure like it. The heaters in the Jeep are good and for me get too hot on High. I can't use high for long, I feel like my fanny is on fire. The heated area is ok but not as large on the seat back as I remember my Outback being.

The cloth seats that were in the 06 sport I test drove were stained up and the foam on the driver's seat was in poor shape. That Jeep only had 35k on it too. Others have said those seats stain easy and I believe it. I have also heard someone have the same conplaint about a Toyota Highlander's cloth seats.

Leather is a good thing if you can get it. Otherwise I would get seat covers for the cloth seats.

BTW, though I've had issues with my Libby recently, I still get a warm feeling from owning one. Besides, since the winterstorm last week, I can tell you this thing drives like a tank with the proper set of tires. Not even remotely comparable to my previous vehicle (Chevy Tracker), which was fun to drive but not so much in winter!

I have to admit I felt the same way as Geordi, because of my recent tribulations but, in a nutshell, I still love the ride (so does my significant other  ).

The 2006 Limited comes pretty well equipped, you should be able to get a good deal... Good luck!

Buy it. But only if you are moderately familiar with Diesels and mechanics in general. Both the 05 and 06 have their quirks which are in general easy fixes, but for some folks with no mechanical inclinations, they can be deal breakers. This site will give you all the info needed to fix any problem which crops up, but you may have to get your hands dirty occasionally. Personally I would go with an 05 sport, because they have fewer gizmos to break. These rigs are beginning to get long in the tooth and the ESP, traction control, etc, are just one more thing that will malfunction. The 05 doesn't have the wire harness, or heater issues that the 06 has, but these are very easy fixes in any case.

I'm an ex mechanic so no worries on tools or fixing stuff..
What's up with the heater and wiring ? (I hate the heater in my Toyota cause it's either a blow torch or freezing...)

Well I would say if you are over the parts thing that may not even be a thing to start with and you like the jeep once you drive it, then can get a fair deal go for it.

I am no mechanic, ex mechanic nor did I ever play one on TV. One thing is I do like to tinker some with the limited basic tools and skills I have. I am fine with doing my own maintaince and some light repair work. I can do my own breaks if I need to. I replaced a cylinder head gasket once with help and that car even lasted me another 60k. I have a need to understand how engines work and all even if I know I will never tear the engine down. I read up on diesel technology and asked questions before I went to kick the tires. I think Diesel is very cool.

I like to do some auto stuff myself I am eager to learn it and feel good after I accomplish it. I feel fine about owning my first diesel and don't see why anyone like me wouldn't. All you need is a good mechainic that can fix the things you can't.

The 06 wire harness rubs through at the top of the fuel filter housing braket. The 06's harness was moved about a half an inch for some reason and it rubs through on the sharp metal edge. The heater resistors were different on the 06's as well, which has a TSB to fix it.

PURE GOLD :D
I love this forum, thanks nursecosmo !. Fixing that harness rubbing will be first order of business, nice to know in advance rather than being in the middle of no where and breaking down. I'll check the TSB on the heater, if needed I can hack and repair.
I have just located an 06 limited with leather interior and the dealer has a sensible price. I have been tracking all the CRD's for sale and the dealers think they are gold plated, no wonder they are sitting on the lots for so long..
Should be a CRD in my driveway very soon.....

OK, any other nasty gremlins I'll need to look at right away ??

Probably nothing specific to an 06, but of course they all have failure prone fuel filter heads, EGRs, and CAC hoses. A lift pump fixes the first, the GDE tune or SEGR fixes the second, and the updated OE CAC hoses fix the third issue. Then there is the whole torque converter thing, which is fixed with the new and improved wrangler TC from Jeep.

Ok, I got most of them, but what is the CAC hose ?

Turbo hoses = Charge air carrier

...and don't forget glow plug failure. The OP will use them for most starts where he is located! Mine are "glowing" from September to May. If one of those suckers shatters in your engine you're looking at a very expensive repair. The last one I took out was split the entire length of the ceramic tip. Google VW ceramic glow plug failure for their experience with the same technology. I highly doubt that Chrysler will ever support us with the ECU update that would be required to drive more robust plugs.

Actually CAC = Charge Air Cooler

Oops. Thanks for catching that. That is what I do when I work 84 hours in one week. Isn't it scary to think that I carry sharp needles full of dangerous drugs for a living?
