I disconnected my heater and had water in fuel light within a week. Clean filter and tank, couple of weeks later light is on again. Connected the heater and haven’t have the water issue again. Fuel is bought from a good source. Other vehicles don’t have water issues so I think there’s a link to the heater disconnect.

Just some info for any and all new Liberty owners who have lately joined the forum.

Every summer a rash of these same air in fuel problems crop up here on the forum. Usually because the extra heat causes vapor to boil out of the diesel. Often it occurs when there is very little fuel in the tank which recirculates through the IP and becomes very hot. It also occurs when the engine is shut down when very hot and there is fresh fuel in the tank which hasn't yet had a chance to off-gas. This fuel in the filter picks up a load of heat from the engine and boils off some of the lighter components. When added to the existing air siting on top of the filter, it causes a big slug of air to be ingested into the IP.

Another cause of air in fuel can be a mildly clogged filter. The integrated gearotor supply pump on the CP3 injection pump can pull an incredible amount of vacuum. It only takes a couple of pounds of vacuum to pull a lot of vapor out of solution from hot diesel. A new filter can sometimes help. It can also introduce more air into the system when a new dry filter is installed thus, making for a very hard starting engine.

EriCRD05: you WILL have more problems with air in the system, unless you install a lift pump.

BobFarley: you WILL have more air in fuel issues until you install a lift pump.

Drewd: you likely have a clogged filter. It will have positive pressure at the head when idling but when under high load, the fuel demand is greater than what can be pumped through the restricted filter.

weantright: there is no correlation at all between the heater being plugged in and WIF. Were you actually able drain water from the filter? water in diesel is VERY unusual in the sumer time. Most times that the WIF light comes on is because the connection gets wet. Did your light occur in rain or after a car wash?.

Light came on when it was a cold dry winter day, possible wet roads?? Last time it came on I plugged in the heater, drained filter and havent had a WIF light on since. Might be a lose wire??

Two things: a comment and a request for help! I installed an inline electric pump to provide positive pressure at all times, to prevent suckig i air with the negative pressure/sucking of th eCP3 pump. Running 8 PSI, 12 Max, no problems.....
UNTIL
now the question: highway speeds, (65 mph) and the check engine lite comes on, then it just shuts off, at 65. No sputter, no loss of power, nothing. Will not start. changed fulter. The elec pump has a bypass, is working.
Hauled to dealer.
Code 1 is for cam sensor
Code 2 is for fuel sensor. (dont know whtat it means yet)

Is this a timing belt issue?
Any ideas?
The brilliant dealer says the problem is a bad glow plug. Yea, that shuts em down at 65, right.
Any help appreciated.

Without knowing what the codes were, it is hard to diagnose based on your description. Do you have a code scanner?
