I changed out the t-stat yesterday (yes, on thanksgiving...a guy has to stay busy when he's off work) and I was VERY happy with the changes driving the family across town for the evening holiday rituals. The temp took about 5 minutes to reach normal operating after leaving the house and negotiating a few stoplights before the interstate. Before, it would pretty much NEVER get up to temp unless it was summer and I had the AC on and i was going slow. I experienced a 1.5 ave. mpg increase (according to EVIC) just in the 30 miles or so on the clock since the change, so I'm really looking forward to the first full tanke with B20 (usually my best MPG source).

A question for those who have done full drain/fill operations: What in the world do you use to open the bottom plastic draincock screw plug? I couldn't get anything in there that would grab it except for a pair of channellock pliers, and I know that's not the best tool to use on a plastic screw...

Dan

I'm getting ready to change the thermostat either this weekend or next. If I just want to top off the system after replacing the thermostat about how much coolant will I need? I have about a gallon and a half and don't want to start until I know I'm good with coolant. I'll get a full coolant flush done when I get the timing belt replacement done at 100,000 so just want to top the system off for now.

Thanks.

I used the open end of a slightly bent 14mm wrench.... take your time.

This is plenty. If you just remove the thermostat and let it gush you will need about 3 quarts. You could extract a good portion of this from the reservoir before starting but I didn't bother.
