Did Chrysler mention anything about needing the engine controller to be retuned for the new glow plugs and relay? We would be amazed and skeptical if it did not...but it would reduce our potential workload

Spoke to the dealer and he is checking to see if the engine controller needs to be updated.

If this is to save our engine, maybe Jeep can issue a recall. pipe dream :ALONE:

The ECU has to be reflashed to coincide with the new Glow Plug Control Unit and the 4 new plugs. If you don't, the glow plugs will be powered with a wrong voltage (and hence wrong temperature of the plug) which will cause issues.

Just got a P1263 last night - glow plug #2 is bad.

Can we just replace one glow plug, or do we have to replace all 4 with the new type, as well as replace the GP controller/module as well?

I believe that all 4 GP will need replacing including the GP controller and also a software update to the ECU.

I wonder if this can be done with a VAGCOM controler?

I don't think so. Unless you can get VAG-COM to recognize the ECM using the "find controler" (or whatever it's called) all we have is the obdii option.

Then you would need a access to a updated ECM to determine what has been changed :ALONE:

Just got a call from the dealer. All four glow plugs have to be replaced as well as the GP module/controller. Should be about $350 total, parts were about $170.

However, it will not be done until mid-December as that is when they expect the parts to arrive. They need to hold on to it until then, as driving it could cause damage (e.g., if a piece broke off of the bad glow plug).

Good thing I have a back up vehicle.

Just spoke to the dealer and here is his response regarding the software update.

The ECU must already have the latest software update.

If the ECU does not have the latest software update which includes the latest glow plug update then it will need to be updated prior to installing the new glow plug and controller kit.

I would appreciate a correction if this information is wrong or if anyone has heard different.

Here is the part number for the kit 68090434AA

Just got a voice mail from the dealer. Parts are on backorder until June.

They have had my vehicle for about 2 weeks or so.

This just gets more interesting as time goes on.

Update...

According to the service dept. the "kit" is not available, but the individual parts are for an extra $82.00. Total for parts and labor should be $526. They can get the individual parts in one day.

So, if I take my vehicle in for a set of glow plugs I will automaticly get a new tune for the GP controller. Is this going to get me the TC-protection neutering tune I managed to avoid since new? Mine is a tune virgin and runs great.... no F37 or anything else til now. I'd be pretty upset.

Lets see, kit not available but separate parts are. Sounds like another way the automaker is giving us the shaft. You need to have the kit installed before you would need separate parts later if something breaks later. :furious:

BTW: My #1 glow plug went out after just a few weeks of being replaced. :furious: :furious: :furious:   :furious: :furious:

Sounds typical.......what ever happened to "charging a reasonable price for a reasonable profit"??

I just had my #1 glow plug replaced about a month ago. Still have CEL on due to MAF being unplugged. For all I know mine may be out again too.

@RacerTracer,

What is your plan for the ECM? If reprogramming is involved, will you swap your ECU? I noticed you have the GDE tune, hence my query...

I will send it to GDE only if Keith determines that an update to the ECM is required when updating to the new metal glow plugs, along with my TCM for the GDE transmission tune.

Racertracer,

We need to coordinate the installation of the glow plugs and relay with an updated GDE tune. We have the tune ready now and will most likely update using the flash tool. Were you going to have the dealer install the new glow plugs? If so, are they planning to automatically update your ECM? Thanks, GDE

GDE,

My plan is to have the TB, Thermostat and the GP replacement performed by a local diesel shop that another member used for his VM Motori rebuild. After speaing to the owner of the shop, i feel they are very competent to do the work.

The ECM software that is presently on my ECM was installed by the dealer back in August of this year, which included the latest glow plug update you informed me about.

This update was performed prior to installing your Hot Tune.

Since I already have a glow plug update in the ECU software, do I still need to have Chrysler update the ECM software again and prior to your updated tune?

If Chrysler has to update the ECM software again, then I may just have the dealer perform all the work.

I guess what I am asking is: What is the latest part number for ECM software update? I'll compare it to what I have and see if I need the update.

The kit should come with instruction. Please let us know what in it. I called Bosch about the about the glow plug that brunt out on me and they informed me that they lost the contract with Jeep and not allowed to make anymore (old or new style). Looks like we all won't have a choice but to buy a kit from Jeep.
