Thats what I a wondering..

Think I will screw up anything if I disconnect the plug harness and install the new relay/control and test for voltage? has anyone done this yet?

here are the new plugs...

This site says they have the GPs. And yes, they appear to be a bit more expensive.

Yes they are more expensive! I am thinking about just getting some ceramic plugs to put in untill I can use the metal plugs. With my luck I'll spend $200 on the old ones and then the update will be available!

So there isn't anyone on here with word of when the update will become available? I guess I Gould consider myself lucky (CRD lucky) that my ceramic plugs went out and didn't break off and F my motor up!

Why don't you just get a GDE tune that has the new glow plug strategy, then you don't even have to wait for the dealer.

I would in a heartbeat! But from what I understand to be able to use the new plugs i would need the dealer flash and then a GDE flash also.

If I could fix this with their tune I would be on my wayI like your question but I don't have any answers because I have the same questions myself! up there tonight, they are only about an hour from me!
After I figure this out and get my timing belt done I will be up there to get tuned!

I don't want to speak for Keith at GDE so contact him first, but I have a tunes for each style glow plug with no reflash from the dealer. I did try running the new metal glow plug tune with the ceramic glow plugs and that didn't get them hot enough for cold temps. Keith can write the tune either way as that was the option when he made me tunes over the last couple weeks.

I have talked to Keith about this and he told me that he would have to send me a new Flash for my "Turbo Tune" , no dealer involved

this was in Dec.

Correct, the dealer doesn't have to do the update unless you want to run stock with new glow metal tip glow plugs! Just let Keith do the update for the glowplugs with his GDE tunes.

The glow plugs look to be different for sure and with the lower voltage the flash will need to be updated.
But the Bosch part number 0 281 003 034 for the glow plug controller is the same on mine an '06 and at least two others with '05s I have contacted.
In my humble opinion, selling a new controller with the same part number and calling it a new design is a scam, unless painemann just happened to get sold the original glow plug controller instead of the, "NEW ONE".

So is the new glow plug controller with the exact same part number a:

1) Scam?

2) Dealer/Mopar error?

Can't be both.

Well I hope it's not a scam, it came in the same box as the plugs. And it came right from a jeep dealer, picked up in person. It is also the part number listed for the "kit". I know someone else posted they had the kit, maybe he can comment.

Looks like a Mopar Scam to me, why replace the Glow Plug Controller with the exact same part number that has been used for 6 years in the US/Canada and call it new. Mopar duped you when all you need is the Glow Plugs and their phantom flash that they have not yet released. Since you are committed, you are better off trusting your tuner who has a better clue than the Dealer.
Oh BTW, I saw a failed TDI glow plug from the same vendor that makes the new CRD Glow Plugs trash out a VW PD TDI engine posted on a VW forum.
Image

Looks like they failed to roll crimp the heating element in place properly, so it fell out and trashed his engine. Check yours very carefully before you install them, make sure they did not skip the final step of production, should be as obvious as the diffrence between the two glow plugs.

There should also be a Chrysler part number stamped on the side of the GCU. Is there not? That is the one I would compare if possible, it is supposed to be different.

It's not a scam, there is a new GCU that is needed to be included.

Also, are people saying that they have received the new metallic glow plugs, had them installed, and then not received an updated PCM flash from the dealer??!!

With all due respect, why would the same Bosch number not be the same GPC?
Chrysler stamping their number on the side of the GPC would not make it magically change what is inside to make it work.
Doesn't the ECM Chrysler wants to flash control the pulse width and time to enable the 5V glow plugs to run on 12V and not the GPC? What else is Chrysler going to change or EF up when they do a flash?
If Bosch called it a 0 201 003 034 A instead, there Chrysler would have some creditability. The way I see it,Chrysler has none at this point.
Right now I have less faith in Chrysler having a New GPC with the same Bosch part number as the old one, than I do in the emails I get where they sell blue breath mints for $2 each that claim to be generic Viagra.

Could Chrysler have possibly screwed up and included the wrong GCU with the kits :dizzy:

Lets hope so, but it would not shock me if they are taking the most profitable way to play it safe by selling the old GCU as a new one, just in case it is fried. After all the other Bean Counter crap Chrysler has pulled, nothing will surprise me.

Berry DCJ says they have 8 of the new plug kits, 68090434AA, available at $126.05 + shipping. 2 day shipping to KC, MO was $10.00.

The CY part number isn't stamped on by Chrysler, it's done by the supplier. Chrysler also doesn't "assemble" the kit, that's done by who supplies the kit to Chrysler.
I need to check into this...

The ECU sends a PWM signal to the GCU, the GCU then converts this into the voltage going to the glow plugs. The difference of the GCU is in the internal circuitry, but the functionality is the same.

Lets hope not, as bad things will happen to those new glow plugs if you run the ceramic glow plug strategy on these metallic's. I hope that IF someone has installed the new metal glow plugs that they have a revised GDE tune that also has the correct new glow plug strategy!
