My last two miles are 25 mph, no hills. So I just count to 30 and then turn off the key.

I will be looking into a turbo timer, cause it does drive me crazy to do this.

You should use Mobil 1 Turbo Diesel Truck. I've been using it in our Jetta since it was broke in- no turbo or other issues even when the change interval has been stretched to 13,000 miles. I believe the additive package is different and does a better job dealing with the additional soot that is inherent in a diesel engine by design.

Of course. This mule has so many idiosyncrasies I don't even put air in the tires without consulting this forum first! (Yes, as recommended, I fill them with kosher room temperature dry nitrogen carefully injected at a slow rate while speaking to the CRD in hushed, calming tones. :? )

30 seconds? How do you know it's cool?

I'm beginning to think the addition of the temp gauge might be a really good idea at this point.

I'm really curious as to what is happening to turbo temps coming up the driveway. It is steep and I've had numerous visitor's cars overheat on the way up, but because it's narrow and winding, you can only drive 15 mph. The throttle is barely cracked on the CRDs coming up the drive and I doubt the turbo is doing very much at all. But, I don't actually know.

It just occurred to me:

I had a major overheating problem with this 05 a couple years ago in which it would peg the gauge and ding at me from time to time. After replacing the thermostat, doing numerous backflushes and inventing new curse words, I finally determined it was the viscous clutch on the fan. (Side by side with my wife's 06 showed a huge difference in wind produced by both.)

I wonder if some damage was done to the turbo during that period?

I don't- just going by the owner's manual. If towing you may need a full 5 minutes.

Just the fact that they put that in the manual tells me that you're idea to add a gauge is the way to go. I just don't know where it would fit. :?:

It was mentioned by ATXKJ:

ATXKJ wrote:
If you put in a new turbo - make sure you tap the exhaust for an Exhaust Gas Temp gauge.
That's what will tell you if you have a turbo cooldown issue and/or need a cooldown timer.

(I doubt it - but it's guessing without the numbers)

Hmmm...I'm not sure where on a dash a gauge would fit. It's too small:

Perhaps if you put four of them together:

what about something like a idiot light. One that changes from red ( over 1200F) to green( less than 400F) and off inbetween? After reading about the other having turbo failures and watching the EGT gauge on my truck..I would like to add some sort of temp sensing on my wife's jeep. I'm pretty sure she wouldn't go for a gauge.

There's a three guage pod available that fits where the assist handle is on the piller by the door :jester:

Use google and you'll find several examples. It seems like only two is available now though :?:

I found this one that has EGT, Boost and temp in one small gauge:
http://www.glowshiftdirect.com/3-in-1-black-face-egt-and-digital-boost-and-temperature-gauge.aspx
It looks like you could use the temp for engine or transmission.

I really don't want to lose the handle or have gauges on the pillar... the blind spot is already big enough for me in my old age.

if it were my jeep it would already have the gauges..but its my wife's..I think it would be a hard sell..hence the idiot light

I couldn't find a triple gauge pillar pod at the extreme diesel web site which is specific for the Liberty. Any more leads to follow?

Unless you are curious or want to study what goes on with the temps (which I would personally be inclined to do) idiot lights are better at warning you when something is wrong. (Provided it is set properly)

EGT, Boost, Transtemp in a GlowShift pod:

Oil pressure on the window pillar with the assist handle intact, I am not getting any younger and sometimes the handle come in handy if I get a sore joint or muscle.

Nice!

Based upon what you've seen so far with the egt, does it appear the turbo gets overheated? If so, how often, under what conditions and how seriously?

One observation I have had is towing up a hill with cruse engaged will put the EGT into the +1400F danger zone, use the right foot and it only goes up to 1250F, same grade, same load, same speed. When you put in your EGT gauge, you will notice how what you do with your foot, going the same speed up lour long step drive, will change the EGT.
Another observation is that opening up the 2 1/8" choke point behind the CAT, getting rid of the stock muffler, and going 2 1/2" the rest of the way, dropped the EGT by ~200F.
In your case, check your turbo veins make sure they move when you move the actuator. Lots of TDIs have had the problem, cheap fix to free them up.

Working in a power house control room for 27 years as taught me that the best set up is both, an analog gauge and a warning alarm (idiot light). Enough rambling, I just want a accurate oil pressure gauge! And it would be fun monitoring the turbo temps.

Well... out here in the rockies we're aren't know to have a lot of hills to climb. I used to drive 15 hr days throughout the rocky mountain states and never waited for the turbo to cool down.... 107K on the odo... no bypasses or crazy circuits either.... and original timing belt....

Hey Warp, what brand is the single gauge pillar pod you have for your oil pressure gauge? Nice job on your pod instillations.
