Gee, only $660 for a new set of glow plugs?

Guess I really got a deal picking up TWO spare sets of 7V ceramics for $300.

And the current set of ceramics is still going strong after 5 years.

After seeing what the VW TDI crowd went thru - Bosch 7V ceramic to Bosch 5V metal back to NGK 7V ceramic - think I'll sit back on the sidelines with my popcorn and watch how this plays out.

For all you guys with valid factory warranty...if your glow plugs are covered under your warranty, you may be in luck!!!

Check with your service writer for details.....

I will check, I am at 69, 200

My trans had a shudder a few times months ago, and I took it in, but couldn't get it to repeat and it hasn't since. I don't have much hope for this either. I would love to have this done on someone else's dime though.

You'll need to ask.

I called and I will need to have a CEL or leave it overnight on a cold night so they can verify it's next to impossible to start and my Chrysler Gold warranty will cover it all but the $100 deductable.

I've got a CEL...#2 & #3 glowplugs...Just dont have the applicable warranty.

Hate to spend the money on the labor, but after 2 back surgeries, 5 or 6 hours over a fender struggling with this isn't in the cards for me.

Wish I had other options, but its either pay to fix it or go like it is.

At least the thermostat and fuel head are covered...after $75 ded.

After I recover from this, I'll throw a little money Keith's way for a tune.

This CRD is almost like a boat....a hole in the water you throw money into...only its a big pothole in the road!!

If this was a gasser, it would have been gone a long time ago....glutten for punishment I am.

Besides the glow plug update, does anyone know if the ECU software update resolves any other issues?

In other words, does TSB # 08-005-11 address any other issues besides the metal glow plug update? The Service manager couldn't answer this question.

The reason why I am askng is this, if the TSB resolves other issues that further improve the operation of the vehicle besides the glow plug issue, then I will go ahead and have the dealer update it. If not then I will go straight to GDE for there is no need to consider having the dealer update it.

I asked the service manager the following question:

"If I installed the new metal glow plugs myself and then had the CRD towed in to his dealership without starting it, will he have it rolled in a bay and then perform the ECU software update only?" His answer was yes he would and charge only one hour labor for the software update.

Why not just leave the glow plug relay out :?: There would be no way any voltage would get to the glow plugs, you could drive it there avoiding the towing charge and possibly a person not knowing what was going on driving your jeep into the service bay :dead:

if it matters to anyone else...
when and if the glow plugs in my wife Libby die...hopefully without cause other major engine problems..I'll just leave them dead and figure out a resistor, light bulb, or FET to act like a glow plug to the ECU..that way no codes..

our climate and where she normally parks the jeep over night..it should be too much of a problem.
my bus and truck sit outside in the COLD(..ok 15F min)..I'm lucky if the bus starts at all(no plugs, no heater..nothing). my truck..does have grid heaters but I usually don't wait the full time..and it starts..worst case on the 2nd time..

don't get me wrong if where we lived was COLD..I'd be in for new glow plugs..and maybe a resistor..I hate to pay the dealer to reflash..
for a resistor think a section of #14 wire or maybe #16....

I will do the same.
Can you provide a quick re-cap of the troubles the VW crowd had with the metal plugs and are the NGK's more reliable?

I'll see of I can get a copy tomorrow...my rig is in the shop now getting it done.

My service writer looked it up yesterday and read it, so I know it exists.

My service rep looked at it and according to him it basically said the original ones are no longer available and if one were bad all four would need replaced and along with the GCU and te ECM flash. Nothing mentioned about "improved reliability" or whatever :|

I too would be interested in seeing the TSB.

Well my # 1 glow plug went out for the 3rd time. I called the dealer and had to argue for just the flash for I have the kit. He tells me that if I flash it before the new plugs he don't know what would happen. :ROTFL: Insist on doing it all. :frankie: I had to explain to him that 5 volts won't burn out 7 volts glow plugs but if I drove it over there with 5 volts glow plugs being fed 7 volts will burn them out. :banghead: At $105 an hour labor and I have a shop to do the glow plugs I will pay 1 hour labor for flash only. I wished I could charge that much.

You should check with your local dealership service rep for the answer to this question just to be on the safe side.

I have a Maxcare (CarMax) warranty and the glow plugs were not covered.

I believe Joe Romas checked on it from his end, and there were some requirements that needed to be met for them to be covered under the 7/70.

I recommend doing them as a maintenance based on experience. I did timing belt, water pump, etc. at 100k and a few thousand miles later it started running rough. It obviously had compression issues on at least one cylinder based on how it cranked. I pulled the injectors to check compression and #4 injector tip is smashed. I pulled the head to find the head of a valve broken off, inverted, and the broken stem driven right in the center of the piston. I've never seen anything like it. it didn't smash around in there a few times first, it looks like someone centered it and drove it in with a hammer! It also put 2 nice cracks in the liner. The most amazing thing is that 3 of the 4 glow plugs are broken off and 2 made it out without causing any damage! Here is a link to some nice pics of the carnage http://img262.imageshack.us/g/picture002uh.jpg/. The head may be salvageable but I haven't sent it out yet. I havent started adding figures yet but I don't think it's going to be quick or cheap. I haven't pulled the engine yet to inspect the rod, crank or bearings but I hope they are ok. With the new glow plugs can GDE get around needing the module? I guess this will be the easy way to replace the glow plugs! Tigafila

I took it in for the flash today and the stealership almost bricked my ECM. Somehow they got disconnected at the end if the first flash and of course the Jeep wouldn't even start. They had to call headquarters and get permission and a password to recover it. :banghead: That why I don't like taking anything to the dealer because I'm afraid that somehow something would get sc*wed up. Well they finally got it done but it took the entire morning. Of course when the mechanic turned in the paperwork he said be sure to tell him that # 1 glow plug or wiring harness is bad. I told them that code for # 1 would be there when I brought it. He got one thing right the other wrong about the harness. I only had a couple of hours to work on it tonight but I got the glow plugs replaced but not quite done. I just have to bolt the intake elbow back on and reinstall the fuel filter head.

A lot of ECM and TCM's in particular were bricked in the early years when they were doing flashes :|
The cause was the battery voltage was geting too low. There's instructions in one of the tsb's to connect a battery charger and set it to continious and with a reliable guage verify the voltage was over a certain level.
That may have been what happened :dizzy:
