Considering how much abuse I had to put to that fan nut... I would NOT want to trust that much force against the SIDE of an aluminum bolt backed half way out of the hole. I can EASILY see that bolt being bent sideways... Then you are screwed for getting it in or out of there.

Frankly, I ended up using a giant screwdriver bashed into those holes, to the point where I actually ripped the handle off the screwdriver trying to get it out of the hole after. This thing is just a crap designed connection. Whats wrong with screwing it onto the pulley, but having a small hole THROUGH the center of the big nut and pulley for a cotter pin? That would prevent the fan from ever unscrewing itself... And removal would be a LOT easier.

Its called design. This engine was OBVIOUSLY designed on computer, by people who have never EVER touched a wrench. Honestly, I think it needs to be a requirement at any engineering / design program school: In order to get a degree designing something, you must first work for 1 school year in the maintenance version of your field. Car design = mechanic. That is the only way the design of vehicles will EVER get to a point of being serviceable, rather than disposable.

I personally used the correct tool that comes with the fan clutch set. I put the other option out there in case a person is in a middle of a job and don't have the right tool that is with the bolt still tight. I haven't taken the bolts off that fan pulleys yet but sure hope the four of them are not aluminum bolts. The metal behind that the bearing is in looks like cast iron.

Say what? The AC condensor is also the tranny cooler?

That's a new one for me, normally the tranny cooler is in the bottom halve of the the engine coolant radiator...or am I getting old and behind...

The way the cooling fan has been mounted on the CRD engine is the same as it has been on any engine I have ever touched, being a BMW or a Mercedes or whatever.

Stick a 3/8 extension through the holes in the pully, put a pipe on that, have someone hold it and hammer away........

The bottom of the condenser was very oily, any idea why?

The AC condnesor and transmission fluid cooler are one and the same. So one or the other has been leaking :banghead:

NIce!! I need some tranny fluid, good to know!

Well I got the new serp tensioner so I slapped a timing belt on while I was at it since I was at 98,600 miles. Oh yeah a new serp belt too.

Let see, transmission is done couple of weeks ago with oil change, now timing belt is done, coolant was flushed, have new serp belt with tensioner. Brakes are good, nothing is broke that I can think of. I should change fuel filters, clean air filter, transfer case service, front and rear diff oil change before 100K. Did I miss anything?

I'm in the middle of my TB changeout and I used the socket in the fan pulley trick to get my fan assembly off. Worked like a champ. I soaked the big nut with Kroil and used a 18" adjustable spanner (cresent wrench) and one pop with a sledge did it.

Now if I can find my small flex extension I'll get that 3rd bolt out of the T-stat. With all the pink debris between the T-stat and the exhaust manifold, it's obvious my T-stat has been leaking for some time.

The only broken item so far is the plastic elbow coming out the turbo inlet boot that connects to the CCV. It snapped when I pulled the hose off; appears to become very brittle.

Hey I finally help someone out with a backyard trick.. Whooohoooo Look at me. :pepper: glad to do it.

Oh someone call my number on the back window and told me to stop speeding. I told him to go see a doctor about his mental problem. I must of put that belt on right, he had a hard time catching up to me. That was because I slowed to normal speed while he was still speeding. Hippocrates
