Got home at 3am last night, this morning we got the jeep off the trailer and up into the driveway, the jeep starts, but the engine sounds all off, I think maybe it skipped a couple of teeth and fubared some rockers, maybe i'll get lucky and it will be fixable without having to use my spare engine. I will do a compression test next and see if that tells me anything.

Best case its a valve cover pull and TB change, worst case its an engine pull(and using one of my spare engines). Right now I am hopefully optimistic.

Now I need to add up diesel receipts and see how much I paid for this thing. :dizzy: I already have $2400 in the uhaul and jeep.

$400 for a uhaul tow dolly and I only needed it for 18 hours.

How did you find it? A risk, but sounds like a pretty good deal for less than $3,000.

Holy moly! You need to feed us with more crunch details ASAP! Did you use a AEV Scrambler kit? What Vancini/Martelli engine version you use? The new technology V4 RA428? Is it disponible for US market? Are you gone sell a complete conversion kit without the engine and tranny or just complete kit?

These are the first question I have in mind, some Mopart performance engineer have already built a T1 version in 2008 ...Link with lot of pictures herehttp://dieselpower.automotive.com/94164/0811dp-jeep-diesel-engine-swap/index.html

I found some of the answers you give in 2010 at this Link http://jptrails.com/archives/733

Wish you keep us and all Jeep enthusiastic fan inform 8)

PS: Sir Sam you find a nice Liby, body look in very good condition, for $3000, lot of hard labor and all your spares parts you may drop in about $5000 in total? I call this a steal lucky guy! Wish you get this puppy on the road in the blink of a eye!

Ya I was figuring about 5k total if I have to replace the engine. There's gonna be more stuff though. Brake pads etc etc that like to nickel and dime you to death.

Well this is what it sounds like:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=95x7NiozPB0

Right now I'm kinda thinking that maybe the belt skipped a few teeth and maybe damaged some rockers, I bought it thinking the engine and everything needed to be replaced, so if it can be fixed that would be pretty sweet. Right now I am cautiously optimistic that it does not need a whole new engine.

Intervention implies there is something wrong with me.

How many have you owned? Do you buy them to sell them, or do you collect them?

Just wondering?

Well I pulled the timing cover, I was hoping it would be obvious that something was wrong, but it all looks in order. I'm still wondering if the timing belt skipped some teeth or if something else happened.

Looking at the cam gears I'm not sure if the timing marks mean ANYTHING at all.

This is a properly timed engine when I replaced the belt:
Image

And this is what mine is like:
Image

So you can see the left mark is roughly aligned on both, but the right mark on my new one is about 1/3 a rotation off compared to my properly timed belt.

Now this could all be moot if they just installed the cam gear with no regard for how the alignment marks were aligned, I guess the next step is to set DTC via the flexplate, then see about inserting the cam locking pins.

Am I correct in thinking that the cam locking pins will only lock the cam in one spot on the rotation? IE DTC?

Also, either there is lots of residual oil or the turbo oil seal went fubar and is leaking oil into the intake path, so if it was leaking oil into the intake and ran low it could have been a oil starvation issue that caused some other damage, but from my experience rod knocks do not sound like this.
