Heh - One of the times I was in NJ, I had to argue with the nozzle jockey who first was "guiding" me toward what I knew to be one of the gas pumps. I ignored him and drove to the diesel island, and he (and another pump sniffer) started insisting mightily that I was at the wrong pump and they would NOT be putting any diesel into my gasoline powered vehicle.

Sad thing is... The engine was running the whole time. They finally saw reason when they looked inside the filler door and saw the sticker. Surprise and confusion about "who did a diesel conversion on this" all around. Idiots.

Thankfully, the last few times I have been through there with my CRD, the station people have been a bit smarter.

I, too, had that problem more than once in NJ, not just with my CRD, but when I had several old Volvo diesels. The worst was actually in DE where we lived, the guy came running out and said "that's diesel!" and I insisted that the CRD was a diesel, but he ran in and shut the pump off. After 5 minutes of arguing with him about this, I said some choice words to the moron and peeled outta there...

Had the same issue at 2 different locations in MA. Stop the pump, it's a diesel!, won't start it back up. take the cap inside, then the restart it.

I pick my stations, locally. travel is a pain though.

When traveling, I almost exclusively go to Flying J or Pilot truckstops. Partly b/c I know their facilities and the quality is excellent... But also b/c I get 3 cents off on the price of diesel and I've NEVER had a problem with their fuel or with a pump jockey shutting the thing off on me.

Unfortunately, their prices are destroyed by the NJTP fuel prices, so the furthest north ones that I hit are in Virginia when I'm driving to NYC. Carmel Church Va, next fuel - NJTP.

I have never been to NJ with my CRD and needed fuel even though t is the next state east of me. I have been there in the past and don't like not doing it myself because was so used to that. I wait until I'm back in good ole PA. Another thing is the guy/gals that are jockeying the pumps are not the smartest folks. One might think that NJ has that law so that high school drop outs can get a job. (ok that was not very politically correct of me... oh well)

I have had cashiers and station attendants question me filling up with diesel. one in WV would not start the pump and she came out yelling at me that the pump was diesel and did I know that. I just told her sweety it won't run on anything else and please start the pump for me and we were all good.

Update: The ordeal is over. We got the diesel out of the tank and the lines. We then pulled the fuel filter and emptied it out. The only place around that sold a fuel filter (Napa) was out of stock and I wanted to get this done today rather than wait for one to come in (i'll replace it when we get back to Raleigh). So...what we did was pour some fresh diesel in the filter, swished it around, and poured it out to help flush it out. We then filled the filter with 50/50 diesel kleen and fresh diesel. We put the filter back on, put 4 gallons of diesel in it, primed the filter and started it up. It kicked and sputtered for about 10 seconds and then smoothed right out. We let it idle for a short while and then drove it about 12 miles to fill it back up and she drove just fine.
We basically followed Geordi's instuctions that he posted except for getting the gas out of the tank. I was fairly certain I saw the line you were talking about cutting but I didn't want to cut the wrong line so I pulled the filler hose from the side of the gas tank and slipped a siphon hose in it and siphoned the gas out. It took a while but we got it siphoned out. To clear the lines...we just pumped the primer bulb on the fuel head until it ran dry.
Thanks to everyone for all of their help and suggestions. Geordi...what is your schedule looking like over the next couple of weeks? Is it possible for you to make another trip to Raleigh any time soon? I had a diesel mechanic who was going to do it but if you can get up this way again.....I like the idea of someone with your knowledge and experience doing it. Shoot me a PM about what your schedule is and what you would charge. I already have all the parts (belt, idler pulleys, tensioner, water pump, gaskets, new serpentine belt, etc).

well I am glad to hear that your troubles seems to have ended with no damage to the jeep. thanks for sharing your ordeal with us so that we could learn what a CRD on gas sounds like and how to fix it. the few times others have used it I have been so afraid of that happening. I so glad it doesn't kill the thing right away.

I did it once, I had to do exactly what you did. but I paid some gas station to take out the gas
