Well when I got mine - I thought the small diesel concept was great -
but I had no confidence in Jeep's ability to make it work
so I bought the 100K warranty and for the first few years -
I took all maintenance to the Dealership - not cheap - but from my standpoint
just the cost of properly maintaining the warranty.
and they fixed a fair number of issues on the EGR, hoses, fuel head and after 12 glow plugs - a replacement head (I did pay extra for them to toss on a new timing belt)
I did lift/bumpers - suspension/tranny stuff - but those are normal Jeep things.
I do intent to keep mine until the you can't get parts anymore - but with the Internet and European suppliers - I expect that to be a long time.
I consider the CRD to be one of the unique vehicles that American manufacturers occasionally manage to create
it fills a niche that's been totally ignored by everyone else.
However - and I mentioned this a couple of times - if you're not comfortable working on your own engine - don't buy one.
It's way too expensive to train someone else - and no one in normal maintenance land understands them.
I trained a couple of techs - on Chrysler's dime - I just paid a deductible and then walked back and talked to the techs.......
they were always willing to listen (they don't get much explanation from the STAR help line)
but I estimated up front - that there would be issues and I choose to deal with those
if I wanted to turn the key and ignore everything else - I'd get a Prius.
and personally - I prefer cabernet's
