x2. The first few times (when new), I had issues engaging 4x-high. I think if you don't exercise it enough (or keep the fluid reasonably fresh), some of the mechanisms get a little "sticky". A few runs up and down a section of flat dirt road rolling slowly and going between the various positions one at a time freed things up and it's never given me a problem since.

I think this is my scenario. I spent yesterday going back n forth between all the gears in the transfer case, both in forward and reverse. As of this morning, I started spinning in 2wd and put it in full time 4wd and it seemed to pull me along a lot better. I need to change fluid ASAP and maybe not wait 12 months between uses of the t-case

nv242 fluid change is really easy. You need some large allen sockets/wrenches (10mm, I think). Park on the level or at a (slight) up angle and pop the top one off so it'll drain better, then open the bottom plug and drain fully, then pop the bottom plug back in and fill with fresh ATF+4 (mopar or mopar-spec-equivalent). Fill until it reached the bottom of the fill hole (which is why you only want to be on a slight incline if at all), then close it back up and drive it slowly for a minute or so to ensure the ATF has a chance to flow into all the nooks and crannies before putting any serious load on it. A tall gear oil bottle or a pump that fits in the filler neck of an oil bottle will make the job much easier (though your hands will get a good workout).
