"there've been a few times when we've been driving at normal town speeds and approached a stop sign and, when the vehicle has almost stopped, it "chugs" to a final stop " - unless you have recently done a tranny service do a tranny service with ATF+4 fluid only and either OEM or WIX filters. Report back. If you have done a tranny service recently did you use correct fluid/filters, if not redo, if you did ignore tranny fluid level on dipstick and add 1qt ATF+4. Report back.
Here's the report back about the above problems:
As it was time to do so anyway, I changed the trans filter and fluid this weekend. As recommended, I added one quart past the normal "full hot" point. Both problems I discussed now seem to be gone. I haven't checked for any codes since doing the service, but will when I can. I'll keep an eye on the trans' performance and report back if the problems reappear. GREATLY appreciate the advice that's been given!

Update:
Since that first "fix", my trans had performed flawlessly. This past weekend I:
1. Removed the FCV and installed the Sasquatch Motorsports intake elbow, and
2. Installed Etecno 5v glowplugs and the required control module, and
3. Installed a GDE Ecotune via their flash programmer tool I purchased
After installing the tune, I cleared the stored codes and went on a 250-mile roundtrip drive. The engine ran VERY well with no check-engine light, and the trans shifted as it should. Using the tool, I verified there were no stored codes. Yesterday, after driving approx. 50 miles, the check-engine light came on, but the Jeep still ran well and the trans still shifted with no problems. I later downloaded a P0700 code, cleared it, cranked the engine again, and the check-engine light remained on. Today, after getting back from the dealer where I had my speedometer corrected for larger tires, I added approx. another 1/2 quart of trans fluid, cleared the P0700 code, and took it for another drive. The trans shifted well, and no check-engine light came on. Looks like the trans fluid level was once again the culprit, but I'll keep an eye on things still.
