I think most of the problems are associated with the filter problem and that relates to specific transmission build dates listed in the TSB shown here in the thread or elsewhere. If you crawl under the CRD on the drivers side you will see the transmission tag just above the pan, mine was white. On the tag will be a long number, mine began with a couple of letters then a 4 digit number that ends in a 5 or a 6. The first three numbers are the Julian date and the last digit, the 5 or 6 is the year. Compare yours with the TSB and see if you are a likely candidate.

Argh. I had 21-016-05 done a few months ago. Do I need to go BACK to have this one done? I have no problems that I'm aware of. I did get the "lurch into traffic after startup" thing but it's been fine since 21-016-05. I've been trying to figure out how to get them to do 18-009-06 but again, I don't have any problems I can notice. I'm getting 25mpg commuting, 30mpg highway (CRD even got better mileage than my Subaru WRX on a recent ski wkend and the CRD was carrying more stuff!) w/ 10k miles on the truck. Mileage did go up a bit after installing the new muffler and I think it's breaking in.

It does do the rev before TC lockup though. I had to bully my SW to perform 21-016-05 - they said they had to keep it overnight to reproduce the problem. I had gone in with a printout of the TSB and pointed to where it said that if the tranny is in the build date do the service. He said he would talk to the SM and get back to me. They called that afternoon and said it was done.

So, opinions? Go back in to have the updated one done?

I'm in the same situation, and I checked my invoice and only the oil return filter was replaced. Now I want both filters replaced. So, how do we get them to do it? Good question... I have a feeling it will be another fight to get anything done.

I may wait a few thousand miles, then take it in. If they do it, it will be another 9 quart transmission fluid renewal at the least...

For what it is worth I just did both filters myself. I had approx. 3000 miles on the vehicle. I looked my primary filter over pretty close and did not see any sign of the split that the TSB mentions. The TSB doesn't spell out how the return filter causes the failure of the main filter. I'm a little confused on that right now. It must be an excess flow and differential pressure kind of thing. It cost me about a hundred bucks to do this myself. I just didn't want to fuss with a dealer about it, and I didn't want to leave the thing overnight. I will tell you this, my pan now has a drain plug in it. When you pop the pan loose on this critter it gets messy real quick! I love warm tranny fluid in the armpit!

I'll be picking up my new CRD this Saturday. I figure it came off the line 8-10 days ago. Do I need to check for any TSBs before I get it off the lot? It'll be my only vehicle and while it'll be my daily driver, I often road trip into inclement conditions and 4-6 hours away from a big city dealer. I'm not anxious to live at the dealership as some of you have had to do.

I know to change the oil to 5-40 after a few hundred miles, to put a new muffler and ccv device on as soon as possible (hurry, hurry, Old Navy), check everything I can find under the hood for tightness and watch for crap in my coolant. As soon as I figure out where things are under the hood, I'll look into installing a pre-fuel filter.

I have my fumoto oil drain waiting to install, but I have a question... Once that is installed I know I won't have to remove it, but will the mechanics who may change my oil be familiar with it, or do I have to educate?

Just a LITTLE excited!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :D :D :D :D :D :D :D

Never under estimate the oil change guy. One thing they don't like is anything slowing the drain down, I watched one being removed once by oil change guy. When I ask why he removed the drain valve, he stated it slowed draining the Cummins too much. I ask what he would tell the owner if he was caught doing it, he said he didn't care. I didn't hang around when I saw the owner walking over to have a look, he is a personal friend of the owner of the delership and has a mean temper.

Forgot to mention he doesn't work there anymore, I think he didn't like being switched to the car wash and quit.

In light of the recent "Tranny bit the dust" topic, I'm looking for a resolution to this topic in hopes of being as proactive as possible.

As part of TSB 21-016-05 I had ONLY the original transmission oil return filter replaced.

Now, the replacement TSB that came out just a week after I had this done requires that the main transmission sump filter also be replaced and stresses that under NO cirsumstances should just the oil return filter be replaced.

So what's the real verdict here? Did a bunch of us fall into this category of being left behind with a faulty TSB? Should I force them (if possible) to redo this with the new TSB?

One thing that really puzzles me is why would DC pay to drop the pan and only change one filter? Worked on a lot of machines, this is just plain stupid. At this point the damage is likely already done, just a matter of time until it comes apart. I cringe at the thought of it, but wouldn't it be better to just run it until it scatters and start over?

I did both filters myself and didn't see any sign of the split in the main filter, but I only had 3000 miles and no symptoms. If there is a new design on the Torque Converter it sounds to me like the vehicles with the filter problem simply accelerated the failure.

Well, we just verified in the "Tranny bit the dust" thread that there is definitely a new part number being used for the replacement torque converters. So, I'm just going to let this thing go to it's ultimate conclusion...
