Nice, thanks for the info! I guess if the seats are bolted in they trap the battery pretty well in case of a crash anyhow. hmm, now where to mount those monster wires?

Monster wires? What gauge you gonna use? I used 0 gauge. I brought it up through the hole that is right under your foot when it's on the go pedal. Then just tucked it behind the trim pieces all the way back behind the rear door

Well, so I though about this for a while, and decided that of coarse I'm hitting a valve when I try to rotate it with the belt off. So, I asked Master Geordi, and he said that I should be able to rotate it if I have the cams one increment clockwise of pinned. So I tried that, and it was still bound. I fooled around with it in a few other positions, and walked away in defeat, prepared to tear into it. Then, I decided to take it back to the pinned position again, and mess with it around there one last time. Not sure exactly where I was, but I wasn't "feeling" the valves now, but something else, and I got lucky. I was applying a little bit of pressure, wondering if it was the carbon that another member ran into, and subsequently ended up taking the head off! So, I didn't want to take it apart, when I was pretty sure that the guy I got it from had assembled it correctly (he had lots of experience with VW diesels), and I was seriously giving it my last shot, I think, and I felt a little crunch! And, it moved smoothly like it should. I rotated it around, timed it, put the cam gears on backwards in my excitement, took it apart, timed it again :banghead:

Tried to start, bad starter :banghead: Replaced starter, he had drained fuel completely out of system and hadn't been run in two years. Lots of cranking, a can of diesel under the hood later, and bam, she finally took. Runs like a top!

Lesson learned, no need to tear it down for a piece of carbon. Just crush it like the engine would if it was running...

Thanks for all of the advice on this one everyone! :pepper:  :JEEPIN:

Idle is smooth and quiet? I doubt that anyone has the strength in their arms to crack a rocker by itself. But if you had the cams positioned like we talked about, I've rotated engines until next tuesday and not hit anything. Sounds like you may have had some grit / rusticles / who knows what - that once you powered past it, you were good to go.

Great to hear!

Yes sir! Smoothest CRD I've heard. After I discovered the one and only PO's maintenance log in the glove box I think I know why. This guy changed the oil really early most of the time (often at only 2-3k miles). Apparently he maintained an entire fleet of cars for his 8 kids and wife, so I'm guessing he just did them all at once. The original rockers that didn't get smashed when the belt let go looked pretty good. I guess he just missed changing the belt, or maybe it was the water pump that took the belt out, not sure. But it was at 158k miles...

Oh, I just fixed the glow plug fault it had, and #4 was missing the entire ceramic tip, and the break looked fresh! I crossed my fingers and said to heck with it and fired it up. NO bad noise at all, so I guess it must have passed through before. A new plug and it is check engine light free  Maybe it was what what binding up in there and I smashed it :5SHOTS: Must be my lucky week...
