I went through everything, pulled connectors off, cleaned, reinstalled. Removed fuel filter to verify only one gasket, cleaned and put back on. Checked battery and cables, look great and are clean/tight. Didn't see anything that stuck out. Still starts the same....

I'm thinking I'm going to order an in tank pump and try that... If I'm sucking air into the fuel line currently, would it cause long/hard start conditions?

What about the fuel pressure sensor? Would that have any effect on these starts if it's failing? I did have a P0093 code, which I guess could mean several things, but one could be the sensor.

Thanks

Air in fuel (beyond what the cascade valve can handle) allows the volume in the fuel rail to compress. Our CP3 pump only delivers about 80 ml per minute during cranking (very small) so it takes very little air in the fuel to lower the pressure while cranking, below it's starting threshold (4000psi). It will also cause the engine to stumble / surge at idle.

[edit] Fuel Pressure Sensor, if it's not leaking, is basically passive. It's only function is to serve as the rail monitoring mechanism for the ECM. It's "eyes" so to speak. Really it's only malfunction is to cause the ECM to run blind (open loop) due to open circuit, or it sticks at one pressure reading, which the ECM will detect a problem right away, when the signal doesn't respond to what the ECM is trying to do.

Yes, any air ingestion in the fuel will cause problems!
Adding an in-tank fuel pump is one of the best and probably the number one mod or upgrade that can be done on these vehicles!
Any questions on adding a in-tank pump, just ask, lots of information and help on this forum...

I installed these steel glow plugs and am extremely unimpressed with them. I would go back to the Bosch ceramics I took out if I wasn't so afraid of the tips breaking...

55-60* ambient temperature, it takes a good 4 seconds of cranking to fire, sometimes (2times) 4 second cranks.

60-85* ambient temperature it takes about 3 seconds of cranking

85-95* ambient temperature it takes 2-3 seconds of cranking

100* ambient temperature it takes 2 seconds or less of cranking

50* (coldest I've tried so far) it took (5-6times) 6 seconds of cranking, and ran rough for a few seconds

I live in Wisconsin, and that just isn't going to work.

Is there anything I need to update or install to make these 7v work better, or is this just how they are? What other options do I have if this is what I'm to expect? If there are no other options, how risky is it running the original ceramic glow plugs?

I'm afraid that once fall comes, I won't be able to start this thing...

Thanks

I also live in Wisconsin and had the 7v Etecno. They didn't work well during the winter. Like, run the battery dead not even try to fire bad. I couldn't understand why my daughter kept saying the Jeep battery was always dead. After I got it back from her and saw how hard it started, I remembered I changed the plugs as part of my timing belt service. I took GDE recommendation and got the Bosch 5v. Still not as good as the ceramics, but better than the 7v Etecno.

Update-

Well.... after I checked everything and had those codes pop, then reset. I let it sit a day. Hopped in last night, and... it fired up immediately, like it used too. It has been starting great ever since.

I have no explanation on why it all of a sudden works now.

Either way, I am going to do an in tank pump, in the near future, after all the research I just finished on them. Looks to be an important upgrade.

When winter comes, I'll most likely rely on the block heater to help start it up. Either that, or a Webasto heater. That's for another time though.

Thanks for all the assistance
