Cost to replace worn parts looks to be the same as a used transfer case; everything else is in excellent shape so I'm going to rebuild what I have.

To clarify, it was my low-range that went out; the fork/pads/gears were perfect on the high range.

About oil... what I drained out appeared to be light-weight motor oil, dark amber colored (but it smelled like old ATF).

When I drained and refilled mine at 143k, It was exactly as that sounds. My impression was that it had never been changed up to that point. My intention is to change it again at about 10-15k, and see if it's dark again. I expect it to be, somewhat, as it flushes down whatever was left after that drain and refill. Hopefully it won't be burnt though.
