Part II

Questions:

1. Could the other codes dealing with rail pressure and fuel flow still be a valid concern and just haven't returned because it hasn't been restarted?
2. Would any codes show up now if the ECU is compromised ?
3. If the cam sensor was bad would this be likely to not show a code ? (The Tach does move some when turning engine over to attempt to start it)
4. Could the P1265 mean anything else? (my code reader calls it a fuel air metering malfunction) 5. What step do you think I should take next ? I have rechecked all the fuses and swapped ASD relay and no change.

I am inclined to think its the crank position sensor again but why the sound when it initially died ?
I hate to spend the time to change it but something is keeping the injectors from firing that appears to be electrical. Guess I could change ECU pretty easy first. If noid light fired I would pull injectors.

What would you recommend next ?

Just for kicks who wants to guess what the problem turns out to be?

Have you checked the FCM or Gateway module. Some of your symptoms go through the FCM.

NO I haven't but found cause (the grounded wire ) that could explain most of the codes etc. I can swap a gateway module/fcm from another 05 CRD into it if I need to. Thats one reason I asked on another post whether or not it had to be programmed to VIN to work or just a CRD or 06 CRD etc.

I don't think 06's have the FCM gateway, only 05's have them.

It is a 2005 CRD . I will look when i get a chance to see if the 2006 Model has one and report back.

I looked at a 2006 CRD . There is no Gateway/ FCM module on a 2006 CRD at least not in the same location as a 2005 CRD.

2006 has the gateway as part of the BCM which is in the fuse panel under the dash. It is separate in the 2005.
Thus far I have not been successful in finding another model that has the same FCM in the same place. The application chart for that part lists a bunch of models that it is not installed in.

Thanks I hope thats not what is wrong with mine but will eventually find out . So does anyone know whether or not a direct swap would work from another US 2005 liberty without tune . May have to see if GDE knows.

The FCM should transfer right over from any other 2005 CRD without programming - As far as I am aware there is no security programming in it, that is handled elsewhere and the FCM just handles transferring the data back and forth.

Thanks for info Geordi. That won't be my first thing to try but at least it wouldn't be that difficult.

I just removed intake intercooler hose and I don't feel much suction if any and I do feel pressure against my hand here is a link to video of it turning over:

https://youtu.be/JrZIAbRIHHY

Also even though I reported the noid light did not light up. I got to thinking that if there was a fuel problem as the initial codes might have indicated it might not allow the ecu to send a signal so I put noid light on a functional CRD and it didn't flash on it either with the couple revolutions it took for it to start and then it flashed. So it looks like the noid light not flashing either doesn't mean anything or has to at least have fuel pressure first.

So I think I will pull the injectors first.

Bad news so far pulled valve cover and found some shavings on top of the head and number 3 injector was missing the tip also . Surprisingly there was no rocker damage and cams look good. So expecting to find piston smashed when get the head off but will see. here are some pics

So I was led down the wrong path by the lack of noid light function and the original codes indicating large fuel leak and low fuel pressure etc were likely related to the broken and beaten fuel injector tip I will post result/pic after get head off. But at least the rockers are not tops. I am kinda surprised that cams don't appear to have any damage.

Well what I thought was shavings may have been oily debris from valve cover that fell on head but still not good at all. A valve on number 3 cylinder definitely broke. The retainer spring is at max height and can push it up and down by hand so don't have much hope for that piston at least.

Lesson I learned so far (besides the obvious to replace exhaust valves prophylactically by 150 tp170k miles) is that the noid light not flashing did not mean that the problem was electrical.
