Did you locate the problem?

It feels super gritty whatever is covered on it. Maybe aluminum? Image

When the coolant was drained there was barely any in it. Makes me think maybe it was burning it.

It doesn't look too good. I'm going to pull the engine put it on an engine stand. It's a lot easier to break it down when it's out.

I better get moving now that I have 2 liberty crd engines to rebuild.

Nice father-in-law to have!

So does everything seem to be in order and timed so far?

What was result of this? Mine lost a lot of power and idoling very rough. It will rarely do this. I suspect air in fuel but it sounds pretty rough at idol like a missing cylinder. If continues will have to do compression check through the glow plugs. I have a kit for that. 125k miles. No issues really besides turbo overboost at high load.

Any DTC's set? (Diagnostic Trouble Codes / OBD2 Codes / P-Codes) :)

No light came on. Similar to others I just pumped up the fuel filter pump. Was soft at first then hard. Started perfectly and fine ever since. I suspect ifs either air in fuel or electrical gremlin. This has happened maybe less than 5 times in 50k miles lol. Very odd too rare to troubleshoot !

Will air bubble or air in lines make it run Super rough like that? Maybe random misfires.

Absolutely! Air in the fuel suction line to CP3 injection pump will impede its ability to produce the proper fuel rail pressure which will affect fuel injectors.
Basically, your engine is starving for fuel when this happens; without fuel there is no combustion and thus the skipping and rough running. :banghead:

Most owners install an intank lift pump to cure air in fuel problems forever.
See this:> viewtopic.php?f=5&t=26385
It covers installing an intank lift pump in great detail.

When was the last time you changed your fuel filter?
A bad fuel filter can also cause fuel starvation.

If you have questions or need advice, just ask, plenty of expert help on this forum!

test

Weird it won't let me post a response..don't know. See below

It happens so rarely I haven’t been motivated to fix.

I know traditionally when a gasoline engine is starved for fuel it won’t miss crazy like that. That’s signs of spark or mechanical issues. Usually just reduced power. Perhaps diesel works differently in that respect.

Pretty sure I did filter. Long ago lol. But have no record in log. Maybe I didn’t?. That’s Alwyas huge debate. Here in Texas seem to have pretty good quality fuel. I don’t do filters often but they sure can plug randomly. Maybe I’ll add it to the list ;) still waiting on my fancy thermostat.

Yes this forum is fantastic. It has server issues sometimes doesn’t load or loads slow but otherwise great. And you sir are a great resource too. Thanks.

I just had an error won’t post this! SQL error.

If it has been setting for a long time in your Texas heat, it could have some microbial contamination growing in the fuel tank which will stop up a fuel filter and certainly prevent proper fuel flow to the CP3 injection pump. (Fuel Starvation)
I would change the fuel filter and fill the new filter full before installing with a good diesel fuel cleaner like Power Service Diesel Kleen or BIO KLEEN DIESEL FUEL BIOCIDE, then treat your fuel tank with a good shock treatment of the biocide.

Microbial Contamination wrote:
The problem of microbial contamination originates when water present in the diesel separates into a distinct layer below the fuel. This is commonly referred to as "phase separation". At this point in the process, you may begin to notice a dark layer forming in the fuel. The interface between the diesel fuel and the water creates the perfect breeding ground for various bacteria and fungi to thrive. The microbes will live and proliferate in the water while consuming the hydrocarbons from the diesel fuel above.
In time, the accumulation of microbes will form visible biomass (rag layer) between the water and diesel fuel. By-products and dead cells from the growing microbial communities also fall towards the bottom of the tank to create a viscous sludge.
When churned up, the sludge by-product of microbial contamination can clog any engine filter with ease.
