Not necessarily. I drive 65 miles one-way to work, all 75 mph highway miles (barring accidents or MLB games), and have 25,000 miles in about six months. My CRD is waiting for Tech support for the third EGR as we speak.

Oldnavy,

Someone once mentioned the soot on the body above your tail pipe and said they had it too. While this is common on my John Deere I don't have it on my CRD after 12K. What makes you guys special?

Only couple things I can think of, different fuel, different position of tailpipe or both. I run B2 50 cetane LSD and on ocassion B10 50 cetane LSD fuel.

I am in for my third EGR Valve.

Numerous conversations and printed document deliveries (courtesy of many valuable commenters on this forum!) have so far failed to yield a new EGR Flow Control Valve for my CRD. The SM seems to think the info is useful, but they are dutifully playing out Tech's solutions (or lack thereof) since it is all under warranty, etc.

Have to admit, I have a hard time complaining too loudly when its all free and I am in a free car.

CowCatcher -

I am the other with the sooting bumper and I run no bio (yet). My exhaust is tucked up inside the bumper facia such that you can't see it, except for the radius they cut in the lower edge of the facia. I was hoping the MagnaFlow cat-back I intend to install after my end-of-summer road trip (with the extended tip) would minimize that soot problem, but now I am leaning towards the AeroTurbine. Decisions, decisions...

The biggest advantage to ULSD will be that we wont have to hear the whining about the EGR problem anymore (hopefully!)

Nope.

I have been running biodiesel with never less than B20 but mostly B100 and B50 in the winter - and still had my EGR go.

I think that we are seeing the EGR problems may be more related to driving style than anything else. People like me, who are in the city a lot with lots of short trips and stop-n-go seem to be the prime cantidates for EGR failure - while people who have mostly highway driving seem to be less likely.. Possibly due to the engine never heating up enough to burn off deposits and whatnot in the short trips. This is just speculation however...
Whenever I drive the wife's CRD I do try to de-soot the rig to help keep it running smooth. It has been fun a few times with cars on my bumper with top open and all windows down.

Scares the heck out of some of them too. Back on Sunday, I romped on it after the guy ahead of me, who had been doing 40 mph for 10 miles on a 55 mph highway, finally turned off. Guess it had been a while since I'd blown it out, was rewarded with a big cloud of soot. Poor guy behind me hit his brakes and nearly came to a stop. Guess he figured I was on fire and in imminent danger of blowing up, because he stayed a LONG ways behind me after that! Diesel soot, best cure in the world for tailgaters.

Funny story about that... I also have a 93 Chevy 3/4 ton with the 6.5L TD and put a 4" straight pipe out the back. I was sitting at a stoplight one saturday night when a couple of kids came up next to me in a honda with one of those fart knocker mufflers and a loud stereo. They started revving up the tin can on that thing, so I pulled up a few feet, dropped it in neutral, and proceeded to blow diesel soot into the window of the honda....

Needless to say, they turned off at the next side street... 8)
