good Luck with Autobarn, oldnavy. By the way, I read in another thread that the Mobil cross reference for a Wix 51516 is a n M1-209. Have you ever used that filter?

KJ Bob and Old Navy,
Sorry for my late reply to your response.

First my mileage when new for the same type of driving was 26 mpg, it slowly went down to about 21-22 mpg and now it is down to 14.5 mpg..Odometer is now on 13,500 miles.

I don't have the mileage computer but do the old true and tested: fill to the top- set odometer to zero - drive 161 miles and fill to the top takes 11.1 us gln. The same method netted 26 mpg when new.

When I start driving it feels as if something is holding it back, kind of like as if the brakes are partially engaged. I tried the coast-in-neutral routine and this seems to be fine in rolling on a flat road. The brakes don't seem to drag - at least there is no excessive heat at the rotors. Temperature is Normal as always. Shifting seems to be same as other F37 users. With OD off lock up of TC is vey firm, wished it would be like that in OD (kind of mushy).
Engine seems to be louder at low rpm than it has been, fairly rough idle to the point that muffler is shaking and hangers are moving.

By the way, I still have the original EGR. The boost sensor was replaced at around 6000 m and recently cleaned - although that seemed to make no noticable difference.

Your discription of the way the engine runs sounds more like a EGR problem then about anything else, it just may be that you have a FCV that is not fully opening or EGR that is in same mode. The FCV is easy to check, but the EGR is a pain, but you could pull the CAC from the FCV and take a look to see if it is open fully. I would suggest a different dealer if they have refused to check the system or just say it's normal. Look for a dealer that sell Sprinters (they had a lot of same kind of problems) & the Cummins power PU trucks, that may be what you really need.

The number of Chrysler/Jeep dealers that were never certified to work on a Sprinter or CRD with EGR & CCV system is scary, remember Cummins equipped trucks did not have EGR's until recently so if the dealer wasn't selling Sprinters they have little or no experience at all with EGR's & CCV systems.

Back to topic!

My typical daily drive is: 1 mile dirt and gravel (10>25 MPH), 7.5 miles rural hwy (55>60 MPH), 7 miles stop and go city (0>30 MPH) I get a change in elevationfrom home to work of about 1,200 feet with up and down hill driving in between. Mileage last night home (more uphill) was 25.4 MPG. On the way in this morning it was 28 MPG. I will fix my slipped connection and test it with it working.

One comment regarding something I have noticed. It smells like new, when you have those paints and bits of things on the manifold and exhaust that are slowly burning off. Has anyone else noticed that?

Yeah, the EGR or FCV could be the culprit, but would this not give me an CEL?
Also wondering: if the FCV is stuck (say in half open position) would disconnecting the EGR change anything? Of course at least I would or should get a CEL for which I should take it in.
As for the dealer dealing with Sprinters, haha! When I picked the CRD up from the dealer the last time , the UPS man delivered some boxes from DCX - I have a feeling that might be as close as they get to a (ups)Sprinter.
I was told by an ex-BD diesel tech that on the other side of the river we have a good diesel dealer - at least one that does tonnes of work on Cummins diesels. I have to pursue this a bit as my current dealer likely has ltd experience.

Just got the two recalls done (ball joints and Torque Converter replacement) and I'm pretty happy. The dealer took about 6 hours to do the work, so less than one full business day, even though I dropeed it off the evening before. The drive home (with the ORM) saw about 27 MPG on the evic and I was staying at about 65-68 MPH for the 1.5 hour drive (off the road, of course).

Light suburban (mixed interstate and surface non-roads) has been about 24 so far in the past 24 hours). I'm running stock tires at stock pressue with no lift and about 12k on the clock.

Dan

Im seeing some increase in mileage too, about 1-1.5. But what concerns me a little is that the evic reading is so high. I had the evic for a week now and its conistently displaying ~2 mpg more than Im actually getting. Is that normal?

1/2 MPG difference is no big thing, I mean you are only talking about a 2% to 3% differential at most. I bet your EVIC has a + or - error of 2% or 3% if they would just tell you that in the OM, but I doubt they would do that for us.

My EVIC, before the MAF fell out, was reading about 6% low but that was because my odometer was off by that amount. I generally feel that the EVIC is a little more accurate fr me than the hand method as getting the same fill each time on diesel is an art that I don't care to perfect. That said, I will do a hand calculation on my next extended trip if I haven't figured out how to fix the MAF yet to do a comparison.

You will never "get the same fill", all you do is just stick in the hose and start filling. When it clicks off don't try to pump extra fuel in, just stop filling. Then next ime you fill do the same thing (try to fill from same pump so as to have same same shut off point) then just do the math. It is just as easy as that to do, no rocket science involved.

My EVIC has been reading high as long as I've had the CRD. Actually, it has usually been more than 2mpg high. And that's before the MAF sensor fell out.

Yabbut I seldom fill twice at same station let alone pump! Today I'm fueled with JP4 ;-}

My mileage just keeps climbing. Before I took out the MAF sensor I was getting 22.5 evic and now Im at 25.1 evic. Mixed city highway driving. I guess the 25 evic will be equal to 22mpg real. Usually I get 20-21.
