well, a Chrysler rep called me and they are offering me a "new vehicle replacement" so they are buying back my jeep as long as I buy a new chrysler product in return. I am still contemplating this . My dad is trying to talk them into just buying it back and not makin me buy a new one. I can't afford a $40k truck! So we will wait and see!

According to what you say, you don't need to buy a Jeep or a truck at all...only a Chrysler product. There are plenty of them available for well under 40k. Honestly, if what you say is true and your jeep has 50k miles on it...you are lucky to be getting anything at all. Why not get a little dodge Caliber or something....at least you will be out of the Jeep...and out of your troubles.

Or a minivan -- with a family -- that would seem to be one good choice.

My hubby gets our diesel through the company he works for (they take it out of his check)..so if we get a gasser, we would be spending out of our pocket an extra $200-$300 a month....

They are going by MSRP on my jeep and on the new one (whichever I choose) and going to charge me .20c per mile. So, it comes out like this. EXAMPLE: new truck MSRP $40,000, Jeep CRD MSRP $26,500....difference $13,500.........mileage .20c x 50,000= $10,000.........so I would only be financing $23,500 but I still owe $16,500 on mine so add that up and it comes up to .............$40,000..........hummmmmm...does it sound like a good deal to you???

If my dad gets nowhere with them tomorrow, we will probably keep the dang thing...as long as they keep "working on it" like it is under warranty...so we will see...

edit:my math was wrong last nite..it comes up to $40k
SO THEY ARE BASICALLY GOING TO PAY OFF MY JEEP..WHICH IS GOOD IN ONE WAY BUT WOULD BE BETTER IF I COULD AFFORD ANOTHER NEW CAR :(

No, that doesn't sound like a good deal...I think you are just in a bad situation.....did you put the jeep on cars.com or autotrader? Also, try putting it for sale over at Fred's TDIclub as well to see if anyone over there bites on it. I wish you the best of luck.

So does your husband get Free diesel fuel, or is it just taken out of your check? If it is just taken out of his check, then I see no benefit to getting a montstrous diesel truck. You are still paying for the fuel at the end of the day. The CRD does about 20-22mpgs, the big trucks maybe 16, a minivan/caliber probably 26 mpgs. Factor in the added premium of diesel fuel over unleaded, and it is easy to see that your fuel cost is going to be double, minivan/caliber thing vs. big dodge diesel. That is just fuel.

I am thinking your best bet is to get the absolute cheapest product they make, just to get yourself out of the CRD. Do the math on a caliber. Dodge gets you out of your CRD, basically they are giving you exactly what you owe towards any chrysler product. Buy the entry level caliber, msrp $14k. Your payments will be less than they currently are, fuel/operating cost very low, your CRD headaches are gone. Don't like the Caliber, that is fine. Just unload it. You will have to throw in a couple to few thousand dollars to get out of it, but in the long run you and your family will be so far ahead of the game.

Lets see, Dodge Caliber $275/month + $100 in fuel, =$375 month. Big Dodge $750/month + $225 in fuel,=$975 month. Both of these scenarios relieve you of your CRD woes. Good Luck with your dilemma, either way.

Greg

Spend $40k on another CHRYSLER GROUP product to recover $10-15k.....
And you are considering this ?????
I don't know what dealer you frequent but, WOW, they got some darn good salesmen.....

Well If you get another vehicle that was the same price as your original Jeep KJ CRD...you would be in a NEW Vehicle for exactly the same price as your current vehicle. If you upgrade to a more expensive vehicle, you are going to have to pay the difference. As for a Diesel, there aren't many choices anywhere except a Dodge Cummins, ect. Too bad they wouldn't extend the offer to a Mercedes?

By law they can only charge you for use to the first time you took the problem to them to be fixed. Let say 3,000 miles that would be 3,000 x .20 = 600. You are getting ripped off! I bet your CRD is worth more trade in to car fax that is a total ripped off too. Like I said before, invoice to invoice, - use to first complaint of problem, or walk out on the deal.

BTW, I lemoned a 2005 Dodge Magnum RT and got this 31k CRD and got a refund check for the differance. I had 14,000 miles on it and first complaint at 800 miles so I paid nothing for mileage. You not supposed to get screw over because they keep leading you on.

This is the correct line of thinking. PUNT, get out of this beast, buy something of a lower value and less expensive to own. The troublesome thought is owing more than this Jeep is worth, then buying into a deeper & worse deal to get out of the thing. All this while struggling with the finances is simply not a smart thing to do.

DCX is not doing you any favors and preying on the fact that you owe more than it's worth. Shop another dealer & manufacturer to see what you can get in trade for the CRD. I would bet it could be more than $10K. Just remember to put on your happy face and the CRD was the best vehicle you have ever owned (50K miles, not a hint of trouble). There are a lot of good products (both new & used) out there that you can depend on that won't cost you a small fortune.

He gets a tank of fuel a week free than anything over that is taken out of our check. It is like we never miss it. So, when you almost never have to go pay for fuel with a debit card to having to, there is a HUGE difference.

My Dad is waiting for her to call back anyminute. I have informed him what all of you have told me, and he is planning on having some "ammo" when he talks to her.

You could sell your CRD for $15-$17k...and buy something like this:

http://www.autotrader.com/ Sorry had to edit for length

2004 Volkswagen Passat TDI Wagon. Midsize diesel car with 38-40 mpg highway and great European driving manners.

Or if you want another 4x4, mid to late 90s diesel Suburban for even less, but the fuel economy will be 20-21 mpg max.

you can get a high milage 96-97 passat TDI anywhere from 3-5k...and it will do better than the newer 2.0TDI in the autotrader post above.

There are guys around with well over 300k on the odo with these cars.

In your situation i would be looking for the most milage for the least cost...think about 700 miles per tank....and the 96-97 passats have larger fuel tanks and have been known to get 900 miles per tank.
