What Darby said. I get a chuckle out of those who say that hand calculation is more reliable for figuring your mileage than the evic. I find it difficult to believe that ou could ever get the exact same fill on a diesel every time with the all of the different varilables...including that 20 gallon, give or take a gallon or two, fuel tank.

The mileage stats that are most reliable are the cumulative ones (which I am too lazy to do) where someone tracks how many gallons they use/miles in a few MONTHS. I see that a few guys do this...it helps reduce errors.

But still, we will never get super accurate readings. But take heart, we won't make the same mistakes that Consumer Reports did in their test!

I've logged every drop of fuel that's ever gone into my jeep - and I can give you a chart for the last week/month/year - back to day 1 (it had 3 miles on it when I picked it up - 36.6K now).

However that doesn't change some of the tank to tank variables, so you actually need SPC rules (Statistical Process Control) to see if it's within normal variation or if it's a real change. i.e. you might need a 2 out of 3 data points being low or high for a 1 std deviation change.

i.e. I can give you a mileage estimate for the entire time I've owned the Jeep with +/- 3 sigma limits - but to evaluate a change I might need 3 or 4 tanks to say if its real.

(Data's on home computer or I'd add real numbers)

Walt.

My 96 passat wagon tdi averaged 45.6 over 107,000 miles and my 99.5 jetta tdi averaged 49.6 for 114,000 miles

Does that make me wack  I'm not doing that on my liberty, I've had it a year this week and it's only got 7,800 miles :D
