Another ProVent/CCV option?

Hi all,

Mike (TheTDIWagonGuy) emailed me some pictures of his prototype CCV filter for the CRD:

It's "1.jpg" through "4.jpg". The goal is to mount the filter vertically next to the radiator, beside/in front of the airbox. The inlet is at the bottom, outlet at the top, and the drain is turned to allow easy access given the mounting space.

This seems to have great possiblities. Any chance that the TDIWagonGuy send us pictures of the installation process ?

I don't know about TDIs, but plumb it with 3/4" hose fittings.

I can vouch that this happens no matter how you route the hoses if it is hot enough. I had this issue last summer-- but not a problem at all during the winter. The summer here in Phoenix is hotter than most of you will see.

I also find that the bottom cap of the collector will dribble the oil out, no matter how tight I make it (even with some teflon tape). I call it my frame rail lubricator.

Why thank you - I guess mine's bigger than yours, huh?

For this prototype, I opted to ask for as big a size as I think I could install next to the radiator. I did this to handle the higher crankcase pressures when towing. Seriously, it may look big in the pictures but it's just the size of your average aerosol spray can. Plus, it will be out of sight and out of mind being mounted next to the radiator. Hold a 12" x 2" aerosol can down in the cavity next to the radiator and you will see what I mean. I think the install will be cleaner than the Provent installs which never seem to be able to blend into the engine bay.

I would be very interested to see how this is going. I would like one of these if they are working well. Looks like if it was painted up real well and installed well it could almost look factory.

When I made mine last year, I did not like the white PVC with purple cleaner stains look. I cleaned it off with some brake cleaner and sprayed it with truck bed coating. I found it sticks better, is less likely to peal, and is more forgiving when you are trying to fit it in place. I figure if it is tough enough to line a truck bed, it is tough enough to endure my handling it.

3/4" and 1" dia emissions hose is available at yer local automotive hardware emporium - hot oily vapor proof, and rated for the minimal pressures (usually vacuum) encountered in the emissions system - will not collapse at normal engine emissions temperatures - oem black so as not to garner unnecessary attention at yer local state inspection compound

Try it - you'll like it....................

FYI: Emission hose will work as stated by GMCTD, heater hose will expand and swell like an expecting mammal ready to give birth.

Make sure you tell the parts salesperson what you need and don't let them make unworthy substitutions. For an engine the size of a 2.8L CRD 1 teaspoon of dirt is all it takes to dust out the rings and having a breach into the turbo inlet caused by a failed hose will do it fast.
