TJKJ... Yea, I know. For all the sniping we may do over diesel vs gas, this is one area we agree on. IF they go for it, it will be a long shot. But I've gotta take that shot.

DieselEnthusiast: Hmm. That is a nice looking setup, Let me see the way this shakes out in the next couple of days, and maybe we can work something.

Is it transportable? Palletized? I'd have to figure a way to get it here to Savannah, that is a long drive from the far side of Kansas.

Oh, if it has the computers... Any chance they are pre-F37? If I'm gonna be mucking about this deep in the engine, might as well think about the Suncoast while I'm in there.

Yea, really. As well as gauges all the way across the dashboard. Trans temp, Oil pressure, the EGT and Boost I already have... Any others seem like a good idea? I wasn't planning on selling this anytime soon, I do like the truck for what it can do, but DANGIT if I'm gonna let another glitch like this sneak up on me. I want to know what caused this, so it NEVER happens again. *rant*

The CRD is sitting on a pallet in San Antonio, Texas at dieseltoyz. Todd put some man hours into cleaning the engine, replacing all the seals and gaskets, and buying a new timing belt and oil filter. You’re not going to find a cleaner engine, and at least you know the condition of this engine. If you’re serious, then I would take $2,300 cash, otherwise I’m losing money on it. Shipping is up to you, but it may cost $300 dollars to ship something like that to Savannah. If you like road trips, then feel free to come pick it up. Yes, the engine has been F37'd

I would also add a fuel pressure gauge

For the rail? Do they come that high / strong? 23000 is a LOT of PSI to pack into a sensor...

either on the rail or the clean side of the fuel filter. If you did go to the rail, it would have to be digital to give you a good range. A HEUI fuel system can have injection pressures up to 32000 psi. When we look at the pressure, we use what is called ET. It is basically a computer based diagnostic program/scan tool

Nice! I can't make out the third one tho... Something pressure. Fuel for the low side between the filter and the CP3?

I think I'm going toward a center-mounted cluster tho, above the AC vents. I have my GPS and XM radio there now, but those can be relocated to the sides. I don't think I want anything over the top of the existing dash hump. For a temp mount, I took the EGT gauge and just stuck it to the outboard side of the dash hump with some velcro.

I wonder if the space between the dash hump and the pillar could be filled in with a panel for 4 gauges...? Hmm. Something to think about.

the one on the right is rail pressure

Correct - 0-30psi x 1000 - I don't like moving my vision much off center when polling for significant data whilst in the pilot's position, hence the high center-mount pod - quick flick of the ole eyebones and I got all the news that's worth noting, all the while avoiding that bimbo on the cellphone that can't make up her mind which lane goes best with her new outfit

Not quite, but the light of day hasn't made things look any better. There is a LOT more shrapnel on the skid blanket than I thought there was last night.

I'm out running errands this morning, hopefully I should be back home in time to grab some pictures of the carnage for everyone.

This last couple of weeks has REALLY sucked a lot. I needed the CRD today to deliver a towable generator to a film set (side business I do in grad film school) and I'm having to deliver this 2600# genset using a Mercury HYBRID suv.

This would be the same hybrid that pulled my Jeep AND a 2-ton trailer together in ELECTRIC ONLY in NJ when I got stuck up there with a clogged fuel filter. That was a bit embarrassing... An electric hamster wheel pulling over 11,000 lbs total? Yikes, these things are powerful! Put that together with a Diesel... And it would be the vehicle equivalent of the X-Men's Juggernaut.

Obviously I ask a lot from my toys, but I also treat them well when they aren't working hard. This engine thing... I'm at a serious loss to determine a cause right now, but I can't honestly think that anything I did would have caused this demolition. It wasn't towing, had a good long time to warm up before I went on the test drive while I verified everything sounded and looked OK... I'm almost forced to conclude that this is a design flaw, but I can't figure out how. Aren't there thousands of these engines in use elsewhere in the world, racking up hundreds of thousands of miles? This one barely had 62k on it.

Okay - this is where I start shooting at sacred cows.

how's this for a theory

Bad Biodiesel - contaminated the oil - causing clogged oil lines - which killed the bearings.
turbo and engine failures are both results of the same problem.

Sounds like a great theory, except for one tiny little flaw:

I haven't run any biodiesel at all in more than 20k miles. Last oil change was just about 5k miles ago over the Christmas break.

Something like fuel contamination would have shown up a LOT quicker than that, although I am more inclined to believe in a bad batch of regular diesel over the summer when I was in New Hampshire and stuck buying from less-than-busy stations. But that was over 6 months and 12k miles ago with no symptoms of anything like this.

I was gonna mention that but I didn't need the additional grief. Glad you did. It will be tough to prove. Another theory is the oil seal went on the turbo and the engine simply ran out of oil. Hope you got your flame suit on.

Why would anyone need a flame suit? I'm not attacking any theory, and I hope nobody else would either. The true cause of this mess still needs to be determined, but probably never will be conclusively proven one way or the other. An oil analysis is kinda pointless at this stage b/c the oil from the turbo failure is on one stretch of road or in my grass (from the exhaust idling after the turbo was replaced) and if the engine holds 6.5 quarts total, it was certainly low when the turbo line finished pumping (and I had shut it down when I realized the extent of the problem) and maybe the damage was already done to the bottom end. But I didn't run it without oil, I added more while looking for the problems intentionally to prevent it being OUT of oil as much as I was aware of. As I have said, I poured in a full gallon, and that brought it to the top of the "full" mark on the dipstick, but engines can safely operate for a minute or two (far more than this did) with only 2 quarts in the reserve sump. The first-ever oil change I did as a kid, I actually DROVE the car about a block with only 2 quarts added to it after a change. The car was fine for 100k miles after that mistake.

With this hole in the oil pan, again an analysis is kinda pointless since this oil only had 10 miles on it, and the oil is now residing at an intersection. I'd say the engine is well and truly out of oil now. :( I only hope that since the engine was only idling when it imploded, the new turbo is still in one piece. I won't know that until I can pull it out again, once I know what will be happening to the whole package.

Fuel-related causes should certainly be explored, as any other theory. I'm happy to address any questions about this, whatever the resultant knowledge. This should be a learning experience for everyone, to know what to avoid doing.

It may be that the purpose of my experience is to serve as a warning to others.
