Even tho you should never say "sticky" in an "oil analysis thread"...you are STUCK! 8)

I will be doing an analysis with HDD Series 3000 5W-30/Amsoil Air and Oil Filter with ORM and EHM in the near future... :wink:

Think I will pickup a kit today!

http://www.oillab.com/index.htm

Has anyone done a filter analysis?

Edit to add my results:

Miles on unit-27882
Miles on oil- 3282
Added- 0

Aluminum-24
Chromium-3
Iron-57
Copper-4
Lead-2
Tin-0
Moly-109
Nickel-0
Maganese-27
Silver-0
Titanium-0
Potassium-8
Boron-159
Silicon-14
Sodium-14
Calcium-2641
Magnesium-27
Phosphorus-1137
Zinc-1071
Barium-0

SUS Viscosity@100C- 12.9
Fuel Dilution%=0
Antifreeze=0%
Water=0%
Soot=31
Oxidation=9
Nitration=15

The lab noted that the Aluminum was out of normal range and it seems to run a little high to middle of where others have reported. Not many are reporting "Soot" but those who are are listing a much lower level. I am not running the EHM or a PROVENT. The lab didn't list it as out of range but I am checking back with them on that. Any other suggestions?

I assume from your 100C-12.9 that you are running the 5W-40 (probably Mobil 1)...and it seems like your oil has not "thickened" or anything bad there. The Aluminum is a bit high but within normal ranges of 10-30 ppm. The "soot number" is confusing...usually it is a % and I am sure that you are not at 31% soot or all your metals would have been HIGH. A TBN (Total Base Number...measures alkalinity reserve) and TAN (Total Acid number) would have good to see.

I would post your UOA at www.bobistheoilguy.com and let them disect the results. Be sure to list what brand/weight of oil and if you added any oil before the sample. Also did you have the oil warm when you took the sample and let the first quart or so run out before you got your sample?

Thanks. FYI I think the confusion on soot is that this lab reports in PPM. That might explain it then. I will confirm with the lab. Sample was suctioned through the dip stick warm.

Dave- What oil,and filters are you using?

My purchase came with a 2 year/25K mile 5K interval incentive for DC sponsered dealer service. So the CRD has been serviced every 5K by the dealer with MOPAR filters and Mobil 1 per the service records on a 5K basis.

Because of the incentive I had not done the EHM but will likely tackle it now that the plan is over. The few here that reported the SOOT did not indicate if they have the EHM so I don't know if that is a factor.

EHM will have little effect on the soot levels, the EGR ORM will be the one that effects soot in the engine oil.

Miles on oil - 5,771
Miles on engine - 12,085
Oil - Mobil 1 0W40 (Oil changed by dealer @ 6,314 miles, that's what they told me they used)
Oil Filter - Mopar
Air Filter - Mopar
Make-up oil - none
Lab - Blackstone

Results: (PPM)

Aluminum 13
Chromium 3
Iron 132
Copper 8
Lead 4
Tin 1
Molybdenum 70
Nickel 2
Boron 111
Silicon 13
Sodium 7
Calcium 2676
Magnesium 15
Phosphorus 842
Zinc 969

TBN 6.2
Insolubles 0.5%
Fuel dilution 0.5%
Insolubles 0.5%

Their comments (summarized):
Iron is high, probably due to wear-in, should expect it to go down in subsequent samples, other metals should improve as well.
Fuel dilution would reflect high percentage of time in city driving/idling [true], not considered a problem unless it exceeds 2%.
Oil appears to be working well.

RYAN: Wear looked good in the first sample from your Liberty. Universal averages for the 2.8L are based on an oil run of ~5,500 miles. This oil was in use about 1,500 miles past that mark and most wear read below average. That's a good sign that no obvious mechanical problems are developing at 32,203 total miles. Silicon was well above average and may show the need for a fresh air filter. If can also come from silicone products like sealers and spray lubricants and this is a harmless source. The slightly high viscosity isn't a problem. All in all, a good report here.

Also, has the air box mod been performed? If not, that may explain the high silicon and aluminum numbers.

That aluminum number is just insane. Are you sure you don't have iron and aluminum switched?

I use Puralator Pure One

Nope. Stock.

I just noticed I had some of the numbers off by one element. I have fixed them!

I'm guessing the high iron is due to the young age of your engine. Very good silicon and aluminum readings. :wink:

Any special reason why you are using a 5w-30 oil? Just curious.

Yeah, I was mistaken it is 5W-40 the dealer has it in bulk, I guess it's required for the Grand Cherokee SRT-8
