Supposedly he was using a wireless connection to get the flash data and got to far from the connection. :banghead: He had to keep the scanner in front of the vehicle the second time around. That's the story I got from the service advisor. At that time I saw thousands of dollars flying out the window. :furious: They kept thier quote of $105 for the flash. The mechanic wasn't very happy at the end of the job.

Sounds reasonable :jester:
You would think he would have know how far his POA (point of access) would work. I'll bet he'll remember that :dizzy:
A wired 10/100 would have been faster just not as convient :JEEPIN:

May be a dumb question, but will these motors start/run with the glow plug module unplugged?

My '06 with 99,200 miles on it has gotten increasingly hard to start in the last two months and it hasn't been that cold. It's not put out a CEL, but It's at the dealer right now getting some last minute Maximum Care warranty work done. I've asked them to check the glow plugs with the resistance test, or magic wand, or whatever they do... but I'm still on the fence about having the plugs swapped to the new style at this point. If the new kit is less than $200, I might prefer to wait till summer and do it myself when I'm planning to clean the EGR/FCV, etc...

So, thinking/hoping that winter may be over, and depending on what the dealer diagnoses - I was wondering if unplugging the GP module would work to keep the plugs from deteriorating further? At the very least - unplugging it will cause a CEL, right? I hate driving around with the CEL illuminated, especially on the 7,000 mile roadtrip to Alaska I've got planned for July.

Of interest to others maybe -

I called Chrysler Service Contracts yesterday to check coverage of some items that my dealer is getting ready to tackle....

I asked specifically about the glow plugs and fuel air/water separator and mentioned the TSB's for both. The gent on the phone first told me that glow plugs were like spark plugs, and wouldn't be covered. Then, after putting me on hold for 10 minutes to check on the FAS, came back on the line line and told me that BOTH were covered under the factory Maximum Care plan, specifically mentioned both the 2.5L and the 2.8L CRD.... so he must have seen it somewhere.

Anyone else gotten this response?

Yep, the maxi care plan covers the most including the EGR valve that the other two plans do not. My dealer indicated they were covered but there must be a reason to replace the GP's like a cel or hard to str when cold. Mine has the latter but I didn't want to leave it in the dealer's unsecured lot overnight so they could verify hard starting. I'm sure that more will be known about glow plugs as time passes. I've got 30k miles or 2 years and 2 months left on my warranty so I'm not in a hurry :JEEPIN:

No. Straight from the "NEW VEHICLE MAJOR PLANS" booklet it says under Eligible vehicles it says "ALL DOMESTIC (DaimlerChrysler, GM and Ford) and import vehicles covered by a minimum 3/36 basic warranty are eligible within 48 months from the vehicles in-service date and 48,000 miles"

There were 2 plans offered for varing lengths of time. "Added Care Plus" and Maximum Care".

Under maxi care it says "All elctrical systems and All engine computer, shocks, torsion bars, engine mounts, All seat, hood, deck lid, liftgate, door & window mechanisms and much much more!

Both plans were offered for 5 and 7 years with total miles of 70, 85 or 100k.
Cost for maxi 7/70 was $2415 and for 7/100k it was $3697.
It was offered in a 36 months interest free payment plan too.

FYI

Video starts 2-sec after turning key on. Four different glow plugs are compared from left to right: NGK 7v ceramic, Bosch 7v ceramic, Autolite 11v steel, VSP 7v steel.

So no reflash for me !
I will keep my GP controller at 7V and install Europeen 11V steel version

Have you found the 11v steel version that will fit the CRD?

Yes sir,
And 4 of those 11v Bosch found a new engine in one week.
No more ceramic! to expensive (70$ each at Chrysler Canada) and short life

First , I would like to do some test.

The cold electric conductivity is probably different (1.2 ohms) compare to ceramic

I will let you know...

This video, of course, is for another vehicle but the idea didn't pan out (work). The VW shown has a hard time starting cold so the 11v glow plug was inadequate. The 7v VSP, although glowed well, has a smaller beveled seating area to the engine than the Bosch and there was some worry of damage to the head because of it.

That said, our trucks don't seem to have the same problem starting that they do. Consider some members here, when the glow plug P codes start to show, just unplug the controller. I would suggest that European 11v volt plugs would be better than just running with the controller unplugged.

As far as I know the European and US plugs are identical except for the voltage rating.Someone correct me if this is wrong.

I have searched extensively for a 7volt steel equivalent to what we have now so that I can use the existing controller and flash. I have contacted a couple of major manufacturers about possible matches and none seem to exist. The 11v European plug may be an alternative for people living in a better climate.

If you are going to make this happen, you need to do it while the temperatures are still below freezing. See how well the truck starts and runs. My weather today is expected to go to 11C (52F). Spring is here.

Sorry to highjack the thread but could you check the seating angle of the European plug compared to the original? I asked this in another thread and didn't get an answer.

Hello:

Has anyboydy tried to upgrade ECU to accomodate it to 5 volts steel glow plug?
My KJ has 7 volts ceramic glow plug, and I want to upgrade my ECU from 56044773AF to 56044773BB to avoid the problem of overheating glow plugs (this upgrade resolves it and the breakdown of the FCV).
The issue is that I DON'T want to include in the upgrade the change that involves ECU operating with the 5 volts steel glow plug.
Does anybody know the version of the ECU that includes the change of the 5 volts steel glow plug (something like 56044773BC or similar)?

Thanks in advance.

Recently I've found in my city (I live in Spain) a dealer with 7 volts glow plugs, and I've bought 4; I don't want to upgrade to 5 volts steel glow plug. The price has been....70 € x 4 = 280 €

I haven't seen the TSB yet. Are you sure that there is a FCV improvement?
So you want the latest updates without the 5 volt glow plug fix?

edit: okay, I get it. You want the last update before the 5 volt fix.
So can the dealer (or other) update to a previous flash or do you automatically get the latest?

As this post says:

http://www.lostjeeps.com/forum/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=47169

the problem of the FCV breakdown is resolved in ...BB versions;

I've read some people have upgraded the ECU (I don't know to what version) and they had to change all glow plugs to 5 volts (and the glow plug control module) because the new glow plug calibrations was included in the upgrade....

Here:

http://www.carcomplaints.com/Jeep/Liberty/2006/electrical/failure_to_start.shtml

in the step 4 of the third JPG you can read something like the OBD Scan Tool permits "Show updates" from a certain ECU version number ....

I just posted at the same time with an edit above.

As far as I have read the updates force you to the latest. I hope someone who has better knowledge of this can disagree.

Your other choice is GDE.

Okay, read your last edit. That poor guy in Canada is stuck. We can't downgrade to a previous flash.

So I believe that you shouldn't update yours until you are ready for the new plugs.
Again, as far as I have read, the updates force you to the latest.

Read the posts on GDE. They can give you a flash to improve power and fuel economy, add the latest fixes and keep your 7 volt plugs. Check with Keith on this; he probably has the latest manual shift version upgrades for '06 with the extra GDE stuff.
