I wrote to the guy who bought one of these:
http://www.ebay.ca/itm/Turbo-Turbocharg ... 4d086866ee

He said that he has 3k on it so far and no issues.
These don't look like the cheaper Chinese type. Seems to have the serial number/date stamps in the casting unlike the Chinese ones. I wonder if these are rebuilds.

It could be a locally built center rather than a rebuilt. The rockers I bought from The VM Specialist (UK) came from Poland if I remember right.

There are a lot more of these CRDs in Europe, and repairing a turbo is probably done more often (and more effectively) than here because they also have a lot more turbocharged vehicles than here.

It is at least worth a consider - as long as the rest of your turbo isn't damaged, this is the business end of the important parts. Everything else just handles the heat or is non-moving.

Why not just ask George at VM Specialist UK , he would know whether rebuilds can be sourced and relative reliablity.

A good suggestion but ... I should mention to all that I am not currently in need of a turbo. I am just participating in the conversation.

Maybe someone in need of a turbo and willing to try other alternatives could continue the venture. I can't answer that next question- "So how is that rebuilt Latvian CHRA cartridge working out for you Squeeto?"

Here is my old turbo. Check out the movement. No wonder I was getting the "hunching". I'm sure the center housing was bouncing front to back allowing dead air to just pass through and out the exhaust and not turning anything. Same with the incoming air. When it would move beyond where it should it wasn't in a position to suck in air.

Just got the old one off (9:30pm). I hope to get the new one on tomorrow.

Holy moley... I can't imagine what happened to allow it to move that much. The compressor wheel HAS to be chewed to minty bits on the front end.

Please fully disassemble this, and get lots of pics to show us what the interior looks like! I'm curious about the two smaller thrust bearings, and the brass tube bearing, and what condition they are in.

I followed the posted link and see rebuilt Garretts on buyautoparts.com for about half of a new one. Has anyone tried them? Has anyone verified who rebuilt them (garrett I hope)?

oh, just for everyones info, my 2005 with 164k miles on it also has the 1/4" front to back play and no noticable side to side action. Jeep runs like a top with great power, but I will take a listen under the hood after I get it back together (recently bought the jeep and doing a ton of mods).

Now that I pulled it the 1/4" out, I pushed it back to where it was, and I'm a little worried what may happen on the next start up!

I was with GDE at the start, the engine was dropping boost. Given they had stated it so clearly no point in a post from me.
Not wishing to ad to your problems: but
Was there some slight hint only in the second recording showing early accessory belt squeak?

ok..
did I miss it..
what was the driver doing to make the noise?
might be a dumb question..but the noise sounds like the noise
my cummins makes during a hard acceleration and suddenly let off the pedal..
TURBO BARK!!! nothing more..nothing less..and not an issue..
not saying the variable gate mechanicism is working correctly

Based off the bad thrust bearing in the turbo I would check to make sure your flow control valve is not stuck most the way closed. If it was, it could have caused the issue with the thrust bearing going out. As it would cause a back surge of pressure on the turbo.
