Cant really tell for sure.
It looks to me that the head gasket leaked between cyl 2 and 3 on the intake side.
Although all 4 cylinders has evidence of water in them.

All you need i a feeler gauge and a straight edge. You definitely want to check this before you reuse that head.

The head is at the machine shop being checked.

FWIW, below is a little data about my Jeep's pre-/post-modification fuel usage. The modification is that I installed both the GDE eco tune and the Weeks intake kit at the same time. I obviously can't comment about which one has made the most impact on fuel mileage alone:

pre-mod overall MPG (90688 miles; about a 50/50 mix of city and highway usage): 20.31 mpg

post-mod overall MPG (11049 miles; about a 60 (highway)/40 mix): 22.09

Are you in a cold climate? Are you running highway tires or a more aggressive tread. I can hit 35 MPG in the summer on rural highways at 60 MPH or less.

Back from my first trip this weekend with the CRD - The last mileage check was in the night @ 25.6 MPG - The temp gauge would move down substantially as the air got cooler - the temp never stabilized in one place and only in the warmest part of the day .. 25mpg is something I am not pleased to see..... :| dw

Hey, 25 is pretty good for having a failed thermostat. Time to replace it.

Well, I suppose several factors could be contributing:

1. Yes, NM can be pretty cold from October to March

2. I live at 4300 ft above sea level and the wind blows HARD from EVERY direction here all year long

3. I have the JBA 2-inch lift installed

4. I'm running an all-season (fairly aggressive) 245 size tire

5. It's fairly loaded down with "stuff" most of the time thanks to my wife

6. Even though I've taken the rubber anti-rattle pieces off the front caliper pins, I'm fairly sure those brakes are still dragging (I've got to confirm that yet)

I have never, since I bought it, got anywhere near consistent mileage in the 30-ish range. All that said, it always has run well without very many problems at all. The thermostat was changed out this past summer, so it heats up OK now. Any suggestions anybody has as to how to improve the mileage will be appreciated.

Steve

Given all the conditions you listed above, I'd say you are lucky to be getting 22 mpg.
Back in December I took my wife, daughter, and dog on a cross country Christmas vacation.
I typically get 26 mpg around town and 28 on the highway.
On that trip, with everybody on board and 200 lbs of stuff packed on the roof, plus a wicked head wind across all of TX, OK, and NM, I averaged 20 mpg.

I average 28 MPG NY to FL and back at 70 to 80 MPH. I am running Michelin Latitudes for rubber. Wife and I and luggage.

I don't think the weight inside the jeep is a big deal in mileage. Having 20 lbs worth of luggage on the top of the jeep is. And I believe any modification to the aerodynamics. I installed a bush guard (long ago) and I lost couple mpg. Also, wind and lower temps I believe are the worst. My wife's 1.8T Passat is a bit more than 1/2 the height of the jeep, lighter and more aerodynamic, typically I get 35mpg +/- on the highway without even trying to drive too conservative, on the cold, windy weather past month I got 26-27 regularly, and that's with a car with decent aerodynamics and better mileage than Crd.
