my suggestion, which is not cheap would be to wrap the CAC hoses with heat reflective insulation, like used on race cars, again, not cheap. Coupled with a more free flowing exhaust system(not a fan of Flow Master due to their design) and a true tune on a dyno, will net you the BEST and MOST gains for your specific vehicle.

All anybody had to say was that a cold air intake on a inter-cooled turbo diesel will not improve performance. Now you know why they don't send donkeys to school, because nobody likes a smart-a$$. :JEEPIN:

I did some minor modifications to my intake, AFE dry filter, enlarged pipe to the grill. With no noticeable increase in MPG. I also did the Green diesel eco tune, with no increase in MPG, but it did increase the power. Put the in-tank fuel pump/gauge assembly from a 2003 dodge diesel in the tank, this is a must in my opinion, starts better, primes the fuel filter, points out any leaks really quick. Also put in an fuel inseperator, this makes the fuel filter last much longer. the Provent is a must (or a simple home made system), this will protect your turbo from the blowby oil that can destroy the engine.
Mine is a 2006, 79,000 miles. I absolutely love the jeep. only thing I would like different would be if it had a manual transmission. I am still running the stock transmission, I did do the trans-go kit to change the shift points.
My overhead MPG indicator reads on average about 4 mpg more than I am actually getting. If I keep it under 70, I can get 31+ mpg, When I get to 80-90 it drops considerably down to around 26. I put on a ARB front bumper and set it up to tow behind my motorhome.
On my 92 dodge diesel truck, I built my own cold air intake and my MPG went from 17 to 21. I was hoping to similiar results with the crd, but no such luck.

Hey folks,

So I’ve recently got rid of the stock intake system on my CRD and replaced with a cold air system. Not to get hp gains or better mileage but because the stock system is, as already identified, pretty bad for sucking crap into it. The only line of defence in the old system was a crappy, albeit not inexpensive, paper air filter. So anyway, I wanted to fix that and take more useless junk out from under the hood.

So for $70 all in I bought a 45 degree 2.25” to 3” silicon elbow and 3” generic cold air system with cone filter off Amazon. With a little fiddling around with the heater hoses, it all went together perfectly. However note that I’ve deleted the viscous heater which would have made the job more difficult. I then took out the MAF and airbox sensor from the old system and drilled and tapped the aluminum cold air tube, put the sensors in.

Runs great! Can hear the turbo now that’s for darn sure. I’ll post photos of the finished system once it stops being rainy and dark all the darn time.

Unless you built your own air box it lost the cold air function.

Where did you locate the air filter intake?
If the intake is located under the hood it will suck hot air from the engine compartment.
To be a true cold air intake system, it should take its suction from outside of the hot engine environment compartment.
Some install a Snorkel kit, but they are pricey and some don't like the looks of them.
Many others have installed the gasser V6 air box intake which takes it suction from just under the front lip of hood.
The V6 air box draws fresh air and possibly has a small ram air type of effect at increased vehicle speeds.
The nice thing about the V6 air box mod is it requires no modifications and uses all stock Jeep parts and is a direct drop-in replacement for the stock 2.8 diesel air filter assembly.
The V6 air boxes can be found for sale used on ebay at decent prices; just be sure it comes with the intake tube as pictured below.

For sure, you’re both correct and I agree, however I’m generally not too concerned about sucking warmer air from under the hood, at least for now. I wonder how hot it is under the hood on the highway anyways. Any ideas? Like, HOT, or just warm? Haven’t built an airbox for it yet, need to work on a design still. Will update once finished.

The gasser intake mod is probably a good way to go for most, especially if wanting to keep the stock look. I more or less wanted to see if a cheap cone filter setup would work at all. Definitely trickiest part is fabbing an airbox that does its job.

Cheers

This is my CAI.
I too was worried about high under hood temperatures.
But watching the IAT before and after, there was no noticeable difference.
The only reason I did this was because of how the factory intake hose would deteriorate.
My only concern is high water. But I have no plans for a snorkel.

nice setup Flash!

Good to hear IATs didn’t change. I don’t think it should be considered a limiting factor - sucking air from under the hood. Sucking water on the other hand, maybe something to consider. Then again the CAI system basically takes air from the same place as the gasser system. Pours rain where I’m at 6 months a year so yeah, water could be an issue. But considering I was finding everything from bumble bees to sticks in the stock airbox, I think generally better off with a CAI or gasser mod.

I'll stick with quality "paper" filters first.

Still recall guys on the TDR page showing increased silica levels on their CTDs when running K&N filters vs dry paper. Several failed the "white glove" test with fine grit present on the intake side of the turbo too.

The only reusable we recommend at work to my customers is the afe pro guard 7, all others let too much dirt through period. Glad to see someone is trying to get better airflow, keep up the good project
