For doing the testing to get the correct results, you must use EXACTLY 12 volts on pin 3, and EXACTLY 4 volts on the input.
If you use different voltages, then you will get different results which may or may not be correct.
You are correct that under normal use, the CRD system voltages will be higher and the SEGR circuit will accommodate this. The difference is that both the CRD engine computer and the SEGR are both operating at exactly the same voltage at the same time.

Sorry for any confusion, but to do a bench check out, start with exactly 12 volts and compare to the checkout sheet.
If that checks out Ok, then one could up the voltage to say 14 volts and measure and retype the voltages at all the different check points with the new voltage applied. Now you would know what to expect with a 14 volt input at all the check points.

Ok fellas, I just made a run to the parts store and back with one of the new SEGR's I built for a friend. No Codes yet. I am waiting for my kids to get home from practice and then we'll head to the Pizza place with the 2nd new SEGR hooked up. I will report back with the details.

Well the trip to the pizza place went fine but when I started it up on the way home I got the dreaded CEL. I will take these to work tommorrow and see if I can get some bench time and figure out what is going on.

Ok everyone hold off on hooking up your SEGR kits. I found one problem and want to see if mine will function now with this fix or if anything lost the all important magic smoke. I will post details before I hit the rack tonight.

Ok heres the story, either I sent the wrong PCB file to the manufacture or they goofed. It was probably me, but I'm gonna call them up tommorrow and find out. For now here is what you can do to correct the problem. There is a trace running from U2 pin 7 to U3 pin 7 on the top layer of the PCB.

[Image

The problem is it runs right across the pads for R24 and R25. You need to take a knife and carefully scrape away this trace so that it nolonger shorts R24 and R25 and it no longer connects R24 and R25 to U2 pin 7 and U3 pin 7.

Image

Now the connection between U2 pin 7 and U3 pin 7 needs to be replaced. Take a small piece of wire, I used a bread board jumper, and solder it on the backside of the PCB connecting U2 pin7 to U3 pin 7 once again.

Image

Sorry for the poor pics and messy jumper. It is late and my eyes are trying to close. I will let everyone know what the PCB manufacture says and whether it was my F-up or theirs. The Good news is that no magic smoke was let out on this board, whew, and I will try it back in the Jeep tommorrow after I get some of the work I get paid for done.

Good night now...

Dennis, I appreciate your quick response to the problem and a fix.

Without this Forum and the folks that contribute here my CRD would be owned by someone else.

A word of thanks and consolation to the folks who helped uncover the problem, I really appreciate all your efforts.

Ok first the good news, I have run aroung all day with the "fixed" SEGR in the Jeep with no CEL. Now the bad, even though I had visually traced the PCB design out twice, I must have sent the wrong file to the PCB dudes cause they are owning up to the mistake, so I guess it's my bad. The fix is easy enough though and I am willing to help if you need it. Sorry for the screw up, but get them fixed and in your Jeeps. You'll be glad you did.

Thanks Dennis. I have not sent any kits yet, and each one will be repaired before it ships.

Dennis,

Thanks for the fix info. I scraped the traces, added the jumper wire, installed the device, plugged the MAF back in, cleared the existing code, fired 'er up, and went for a spin. No CEL. I think it is fixed!

Thanks!

Mark

Not a problem. I implemented the change on my test unit, box works exactly like all the rest now. I should be good to go now.

The very next day, my wife drives it, and the CEL comes on. At least it's not immediate, now. Still P0102.

I'll bench test it this weekend. Next, I'll be asking which resistors are the greatest influence on output voltages, so I know which ones to buy more of and start desoldering.

Sorry to hear that Mark. I am still running the fixed SEGR and have no codes to report. Let me know what you find.

LocoCRD,
Bench testing gave voltages within .2 volts of the required readings at all points. Both of the units I built test the same.
Hooked up the corrected segr last night and drove it out of the garage this morning. No CEL .I proceeded to drive the next hour to work in terrible snow storm here in NW Wisconsin averaging 25-40 mph ,perfect light load conditions for actuating a functional EGR system. The SEGR got warm but not so warm that you cannot hang on to it.Made several stops and engine restarts probably 8, NO CEL. It appears the PCB may be fully corrected now. I will post tonight as to results on the way home.
I have started the jeep and drove it about a block then shut it off, restarted with NO CEL . I did this 4 times. In other words I have been trying to get it to throw a CEL.
A failing EGR will usually set a CEL code with short engine start /stop cycles. But the EGR is out of the circuit now.
If works ok going home tonight, the second jeep gets converted this week end.
How will this work in extremely cold weather,-20*? Will the cold cause a CEL?
Thank you for locating the problem on the board so quickly.

Guys,

My bench test yesterday showed values that were well within the tolerance range. I rechecked all of my wiring underhood (continuity tests from the board all the way to the connector, then opened the harness and checked the other wires, too). Everything's fine, but I still get a CEL.

UFO mentioned that perhaps my MAF is bad. After driving it this morning with the bypass plug installed, I can confirm that this is the case. I'm getting the P0102 code without using the SEGR.

It was fine before this, so it appears I fried it either in the process of installing this system or by that shorted trace on the board. I'm bringing this up not to fix blame, but to ensure that other SEGR builders ensure that the board problem is fixed before they install their SEGRs.

Now, does anybody know where I can get a deal on a MAF sensor for this? Does anybody know the part number? My local Jeep dealerships don't sell parts on weekends--so I've decided not to do business with them at all.

Thanks!

Mark

Been looking over the last posts and all your cut wires look like they should.
??? Have you tried taking the MAF out and cleaning it?
My last thought is and would need further imput on this from others is: The C2-17
is a splice. Have you checked that for a good connection and as I said. I do not know
whether this would throw a code or not.

Steve

Thanks!
