Absent a matching recess and given that there apparently is a passage these must serve some function. Rather odd indeed.

I did not see a caution in the FSM list to be sure to capture these little parts when the cover is removed or to install them when it is put back on. It would be very easy to throw one or both away if one had trashed out the rocker set and was busy fishing bits and pieces of scrap metal out of the head recesses. I had thrown one into my throw away box and was able to retrieve it because I learned years ago to NEVER throw ANYTHING away until the job was finished and verified good. I think it is obvious that a full and complete write up in the tech section on pulling the cover and replacing lifters and rockers is needed.

This has been a frustrating experience for me, slow and tedious, but near impossible without the help of the forum members. Like most that have done the job once, I could much more easily attack this job a second time (though I plan not to). With good documentation maybe we could get the first timers down to about 150% of the time and frustration of the more experienced forum members.

Were you able to get a lot of pictures while re-assembling and putting on the cover?

I've got the parts on the way, so once they and the kit arrives from GDE I can capture some pics as well, if needed.

If this forum hadn't been here, we wouldn't still own the CRD.. it makes that much difference to have the information. So, I'm all for adding to the library.

Mark

Yes I'd be happy to do a photo documentary of how to replace the rockers on the CRD.

Well, I have reached the end of the road on this side trip. I started my Jeep this morning, idled for 10 minutes, drove it and all was great. My 8 year old grandson wanted to go fishing so I told my wife to keep her phone close just in case, hooked up my bass boat to the Jeep and went fishing. I worked great.

So all is well in Jeep ville for me, until I find a unique way to screw her up again.

A word to the wise, use pins in the cam, don't try to use allen wrenches. If you have a grinder you can make pins from 2 inch bolts from Home Depot. Use alignment pins when putting the lid on. You can make alignment pins from 4 inch bolts from Home Depot. Use a cam gear locking tool. You can make one from stuff at Home Depot, lots of examples out there. Timing the engine is not hard but needs to be approached with great respect. Check, check, check, check then double check.

Or get the tools from GDE.

UPDATED:

After receiving a note from the seller - I've learned that the new Eurocam lifters are in fact like the new OEM lifters - both are sprung internally as I'm used to seeing with other hydraulic lifters. They were so stiff I'd concluded they weren't supposed to move, but after working them a bit they begin to loosen up and move about the same 0.1" travel as the OEM (new) ones do.

So - I still can't say how the original (2005, crimped ones) were supposed to work with certainty but did want to correct my earlier post.

Mark and/or Wobbly,

While my lifters showed up last week (thanks Wobbly!), I only got into the office to pick them up today. Mine too are quite stiff. What do I need to do to "work" them? They came nicely oiled, so it doesn't seem they need to soak. I've tried squeezing they repeated by hand. I'm reticent to use anything more aggressive. Thoughts?

If they are brand new then I would not be too concerned about the stiffness. If they are used the tiny oil ports internal to the lifters may be clogged with soot. The lifters can be taken apart , cleaned and put back together. I did that with several lifters and they worked great after cleaning. Galatron also cleaned up a bunch of used lifters and is in the process of reusing them. To take a lifter apart and put it back together is about a 10 to 15 minute job so 3 to 4 hours if you tore down and cleaned all 16.

I did not try to clean any lifters that were not fine once I cleaned them, Galatron has reject one lifter so the success rate is pretty good. Galatron has cleaned up a full set (I think} and is holding them for the next forum member that needs them.

Brand new use them as is. Used disassemble, clean, reassemble and use them. My advice for what its worth.
