Keep in mind that lower gear ratio will add more load on the engine which increases fuel consumption, unless you modify your driving habits to barely accelerate. It's similar to replacing your stock tires with bigger diameter tires. Load increases on same time 0-60 acceleration, but you gain higher speed per rpm. So regearing won't necessarily increase your mileage, unless you adjust the way you accelerate.[/quote]

i disagree with you. lowering the gear ratio has always increased my mpg. i had a dodge cummins with 3.08's and it got 23 mpg average. i traded up a year and got 4.10's, mileage was 15 mpg. i had a 93 chevy truck 350 engine that achieved 24 mpg on the highway. traded up to a 94 with same engine and 3.73's and it got 12 mpg average. my point is that mileage would only decrease if you lowered rpms below the required HP/Torque curve required to pull the vehicle the speed you choose to drive. if you gear it too low you are just spinning the engine faster than necessary.
