Thanks for the fixed link.

I would be curious to get a better look at that intake. It looks to me like it might be a hybrid between the gas and CRD. Maybe a CRD box with a separarate "snorkel" piece? I really don't get three variations on the theme, but I have another half baked theory I'm going to throw out. If some guy with a gut leaned across the gasser style snorkel on a running CRD, would it give him a nasty belly hickey? Maybe it is a safety thing? I know it sounds far fetched, but stranger things have happened.

Don't know what a yellow card is, but the link is changed.

They laugh but you may very well have hit the nail on the head with the safety point of intake suction, and there is not much else they could do with the air intake without some major reworking under the hood.

That'll have to be the way it is then for me. You'll be able to spot us at the beach - a snorkel imprint on our gut. It runs much better with the snorkel on. I now have 3 days and over 200 miles on the snorkel airbox. It's still CLEAN on the bottom - no sand, road debris, or leaves. I couldn't go a day before without a load of sand in the bottom of the airbox.

I would not have believed the difference if I hadn't seen it myself.

So if I go to a scrapyard and yank the bottom half of the airbox and associated ductwork off of a gasser it will fit right in? No problems at all?

Whats the vote on this mod? Any downsides to it at all?

Don't know if there are any downsides yet. I haven't driven it in the rain yet to see if the snorkel keeps rain water out, which is all I really wanted to start with. But yes, my 2002 Liberty V6 snorkel air box bottom fit perfectly into my 2005 CRD. I still am amazed how dirty the CRD airbox was getting in comparison. I'm too tired today to try and figure out why. I'm just going to enjoy it.

I was just thinking the same thing, downside that is guys. With my luck around here, I would have to order a new one if I wanted to do this mod. Not sure I will bother with it for now, as we have had no problem.

Can someone explain why we don't just take the plastic tubing off, wouldn't that solve the rain problem?

Well it would be kind of self defeating as far as the intercooler goes grabbing all the hot air in engine compartment, where the snorkle gets it from in front of the Jeep aiding in cooling.

Well, from experience, it does work quite well if the only concern is preventing water and road dirt from getting sucked into the filter. Takes all of 30 seconds and it's free. That's how I've been running for the last 4500 miles. When you give it some hefty throttle, you can hear the air getting sucked in thru that 3 1/4" hole, even with the windows up.

But, as oldnavy points out, if you're also concerned about getting cold intake air to the engine, you're worse off than before in that regard.

Until some aftermarket guys come up with a BHF setup that also does decent filtration, the "gasser" mod to the airbox looks to be the best bet so far.

Oh yeah, BHF = Big Honking Filter

Everyone has said the intake is different-- but is everyone comparing older gassers to new 2005 + CRD's?

A bunch of Gassers in the 4x4 forum were upset that the new Libbies had a retarded airbox that was pulling in air down lower by the headlight-- looks to me like our airbox. They were talking about getting the old snorkel tops off the older models and the junk yard and putting them on. I don't think the CRD airbox is unique-- I think it the new airbox for all Liberties. Could somebody with a new gasser-- or at a dealership look and see?

I think I am going to make a run for the junk yard to get a older air intake off a gasser. The bean counters at DC may have struck again.

I compared my 2005 CRD with a 2006 sport 3.7 it has the top snorkel just like the pictures earlier

with the snorkel mod and still no dirt, debris, sand particles or trash in the bottom of the airbox. Being analytical by nature, I want to know why - why - why is it so much cleaner just by raising the intake opening 6 or 8 inches higher? Granted, it isn't a big deal, but it is a curiosity.

I'm going to throw out a speculative guess - the height from the road surface to either the grill opening or the hood seam isn't the definitive factor. The only explanation I can come up with is that due to the dual fans within the grill, at highway speed, there is quite an airflow entering into the grill area, picking up road dirt, debris and even water, that is relatively confined to the grill opening. Above the fan pull and opening area in the grill, air has a slower flow and less airflow above the grill area is occuring. In fact I would theorize that the air flow hitting the front of the CRD is entering the grill area, and past that area, is actually pushed upward more than it is into the vehicle. So my guess is that all the trash and debris is sucked up into a huge vacuum pump area that is the front grill on the CRD.

I think my Sailor memory could've figured "BFF" but the H was throwing me.

--------------------

Any thoughts on Ranger's theory that the 3.7 gasser snorkle will pull in grill spill-over, specific to having a bug deflector mounted? They wrap under the hood lip and might create enough of a clearance issue to plug that airpath to the snorkle... The wrap-under stops at the headlight bulge so air would get in that way, but not sure if enough.

Thanks.

I started to call it a "BFF" but figured I'd better keep it "G for General Audiences".

I think I'm going to hit a few scrapyards this weekend to see if I can get the intake parts I need to do this. Is there anything I should get besides the bottom of the airbox with the snorkel on it? What would be a fair price if I remove the parts myself? Hey maybe I can find some skidplates while I am searching about

That ebay listing says "Lists new for $130" !!

Do you think DC will work out an arrangement with us CRDers? I must say, without the time (or much of an interest, admittedly) to tinker on the Jeeplet I am quite dissatisfied with having to consider a retrofit for my air inlet to keep leaves and road salt off my filter, tro say nothing for an severely undersized (requiring more frequent reeplacement at steep prices) air filter.
