Post subject:  AC Can Barely Keep Up
Thought I would check to see what your experiences are in this area. It is very hot today 101/103 range and the AC on my CRD is barely staying ahead of it. Is that a Jeep thing or should I hae it checked?

My '05 CRD is fine with A/C. We had very hot temps here last week (95-102)+ big humidity. A/C blew cool air all the time. Sitting in traffic, it did not work as well as on the hiway, but I think all car a/c is like that. Temp gauge never got over 11:58 either. I don't think you can expect much more than a 25 degree diff betwenn ambient air and a/c air, so at 100F, 75 would seem about right. It is dry air though.

My CRD has the best airconditioning of any vehicle that I have owned (over 26 vehicles to date). It gets so cold in the vehicle on the lowest setting.

I assume you have dark glass on a limited, it's important when driving a greenhouse. We got a 95 degree & high humidity day last week, A/C was brutal cold on mine. Also have the sunroof, cracking it open helps alot to vent the heat out the roof.

Find some shade to park in and leave the windows cracked about 1/2" or more. It's common knowledge down here.

Put the control lever on the recirc side and that will close off hot outside air being mixed in with the cool air and help cool vehicle sooner.

It was 118 here on Friday (that's about the 6th level of Hell in Dante's terms). The AC keeps up better than either of our Mercedes. However, the compressor does seem to cut out on acceleration. Is this a programmed-in kind of thing?

Yes they are set up that way to prevent damage to compressor and increase power when there is a strong throttle demand. In some cars it would be less noticable due to type/power of engine and compressor design.

On our way to Myrtle Beach, SC July 14th, the A/C in our Liberty Limited 4x4 performed great; generally never left Level 1 whilst in re-circ mode on the interstates. I personally like it really cool when I'm driving; the wife had a long sleeve jacket to toss on and the 5 year old had her blankie. Even at the beach the A/C performed great, too............90---94*F with heat indices in the mid 100*F's.......

Color has a lot to do with it. Mine is Patriot Blue so it gets very hot if its parked in the sun for any length of time . I the fan in the recurculate position, you keep cooling the same air rather than trying to cool hot outsaide air.

Get it checked. Can't hurt anything. I've got the darkest color, other than black, I live in Phoenix and the thing cools off unbelievably fast and blows COLD air. On a hot day it takes about 5 minutes to bring the temp to a comfortable level. I did add additional tint to the front windows (the reflective kind) and bought a front windshield reflective shield of the material pilots use (dealer item $20.) for when I'm parked. I don't know that either of these change the temperature that drastically, but they certainly help when I sit in the seats or touch the steering wheel.

You know it was probably heat stroke as I think I did not have it on recirculate. :roll: Don't tell my daughter........she has designs on my CRD and if she thinks I am losing it she may have me committed! :wink:

I found that when you first turn it on if you leave it in the lowest blower setting for a minute or two it will get a lot colder and keep up better then if you have the blower at a higher setting straight out. :)

When you have it in the lowest setting just keep feeling in front of the vents and when it feels like your sticking your hand in a freezer you can put the blower on any setting you want it will keep up if it doesn’t have it checked out.

Seriously, recirculate is the answer. Any A/C system can only lower the air a certain number of degrees per pass through of the system. If your always pulling in fresh air, say at 103 degrees, it will only ever come through say 20 to 30 degrees cooler. Recirc will keep recooling the same air lower and lower - to a point anyway.

I also think you should have it checked. When I bought my VW Jetta TDI it was undercharged eventhough the car was new.

Yup. RECIRCULATE was the answer. Before this year I have used that setting maybe 6 times in the last 40. Thanks for the lesson. :lol:

Does anyone know what the vent air temperature should be on our vehicles? I had the torque converter TSB done and they changed the transmission cooler, which I think entailed them removing the A/C condenser. Ever since, my a/c has not been shockingly cold as it was when new. Of course, we have been near 100 degrees here lately, so perhaps I am just crazy. I think my vent temp is around 45 degrees, and I have the tinted limited windows.
